Wheel Bearings

Recommended Posts

After a drvie to Edinburgh and back my C started making a whirring noise from the front left wheel. Which I have diagnosed as wheel bearing, hopefully correctly.

Anyway, my dad had mentioned that a local garage in his town (where i grew up south of Aberdeen) is pretty knowledgable about VW's. Apparently the owner used to have Gti's and the son who works there now transplanted a corrado vr6 into a mk2 that my dads friend bought.

So gonna take it down there to get bearings and possibly bushes/arms done :) Also gonna get my belts checked out as all are new but one is squeeking a fair bit recently.

Should be a pretty fair price to, pretty glad to hear this as I had become a bit weary of local ones in aberdeen even after having a heap of work done on my old golf and then G60. Seemed like they recommended new bushes/discs...basically any running gear item at the drop of a hat.

Getting it done on Monday. How much you reckon bearings parts and labour should be? I am guessing not much at all as they are sealed etc..a dn pretty easy to fit are they not?

Oh...and also, are G60 engines like mk2's..with hydrualic tappets?

Yup, Hydraulic tappets exactly the same as the MK2 GTI engines... 8) (just fitted new ones to my G60 :) )

Yeah cool thought so. I love the way corrados are like the golfs.

Kinda have a character to them...somedays they drive off so well from cold, others they need to warm up. Know what I mean?

Always great when its cold out tho (no ice) and oil temp is warmed up :)

Nice cold air makes so much difference

What is the garages name or phone number you are planning to take your car to? I've been having a lot of trouble with the garage I normally use and looking for a good mechanic in the Aberdeen area.

I had the n/s front bearing done this year. Total bill was £80. £30 for parts. The local garage I used north of Aberdeen said they had a lot of trouble pressing out the old one so charged £50 for labour.

Walker Motors in Oldmeldrum is a VW specialist, used to work for Specialst car or so the rumour goes. They replaced my EW regulator in 1.5hrs, seem decent folks.

Bavaria on Hutcheon St, Aberdeen know what they are talking about with Corrados. I use them for serviceing and minor repairs, cheaper than stealer per hour.

Hope that helps

Front wheel bearings can be a right sod to press out so the time and money they charged you seams to be pretty standard.

For work in Aberdeen you should give Aberdeen volks centre in Kingswells a shout

Call on 01224 742520 :D

I think that scottcorrado had some problems with Bavaria motor werks

I used Bavaria for my mk2 Golf Gti 8v.

Got a heap of work done on that...new rad, bushes, mounts etc..

Carried on with them when I got my G60.

Had new rad, shocks, discs etc.. And charger removed send to Jabba...sns chip fitted, pulley blah blah done by them.

I sometimes think they are a bit liberal with their quotes for work needed but maybe its just me and it actually needs it!

Anyway, the garage is Bridge End Garage in Montrose, just a small place and 45 miles from Aberdeen so not really much use to those without relatives down there :/

I have always been happy with wok from Bavaria, they do know what they are on about for sure. Got my Corrado running well with all the upgrades after initial fuel leak! :)
