Power Gain From Exhaust Cam Mod?

Recommended Posts

At the moment im running a standard kr 16v with the usual mods, exhaust/filter/shocks..What sort of power should you expect to gain from a replacing the inlet cam with a modded kr exhaust cam?

Would a rolling road tune be recommended?

Has anyone done this to their 16v that can give any advice in getting peak performance?

aslong as you have the modded chainwheel aswell it will work very well.

My old engine when it was 1.8 made 163bhp with just that cam and a 4branch up freom 136bhp

That is the exception rather than the rule. Didn't you also have some massive throttle body on there aswell?

It's a very mild mod, only 0.5mm more lift than the KR intake cam. I saw a 10hp increase on one of my engines with that and no other changes.

Would be interesting to know how much better the modded exhaust cam is than the KR inlet in the 9A. Anybody done both? I've got a spare exhaust cam, but is it worth the bother if I've already got the KR inlet in my 9A?

I saw just under 154bhp at Stealth with my 1.8 16v. It had a Miltek exhaust (little difference I'm thinking) and Kent GF1602R cams.

These were a bargain at under £200 inc VAT.

I had them fitted as part of a head rebuild following a cambelt failure and was very happy indeeed with the result... :)

if you dont correct the timing using a modified chainwheel, then the car will idle like poo and have bad power band.

Mine idled perfect and had power from 2k up

The other good bit about the Kent cams is that you don't need to mess about with modified chainwheels as they're a direct swap... :)

But you dont get increased torque from 2k

I gave Stealth a call today and they said they have stopped doing the chainwheel mod!! Oh no! Does anybody know of anyone else who can modify the chainwheel that would be reliable aswell?? :?

I have a rolling road print out from Surrey Rolling Road (Indipendent specialist) showing my power to be at 124bhp and running very lean...

On Stealths road 2 days later running on the same fuel with no change to the set up it recorded 143bhp but still lean at the top end...

My point is that I wouldn't get too excited about their 'power' figures...
