MNuTz 0 Posted September 29, 2006 Hi all, Ive just bought DannyWhiteley's 1.8 16v and i have a few problems with the car. The first seems to be the cooling system, on the way up the motorway the engine temp was sat @ 90'c. The next day i got in it to find the temp light flashing at me, stopped the car and restarted and the light stayed off. It came on later that day again but never came back on after a restart. I checked all the fluids today to find that the cap of the cooling system wasnt fully tightened and the water level just below the min mark. Topped it up and tightened the cap fully. However the car still seems to be running hot, once i hit anything over 60mph it drops to 90'c however round town it will sit at 110'c. Surely this cant be right can it? Second problem, the car redlines at 7K revs but once i hit 6K the car seems to stop pulling, its hard to explain but it just feels like the car is losing power and can judder ever so slightly. Along with this i leave a nice cloud of smoke behind, not sure of the colour but maybe grey/blue. Any suggestions?? Oh, i also have no heat but the blowers work so i need a new heater matrix. The MFA MPG seems stuck at 99.9MPG And is the engine in the rado the same as the 1.8 16v in the mk? golf? could i buy the Haynes manual for the golf and use it to work on the engine? vr6storm 0 Posted September 29, 2006 you measuring oil temp on the mfa or water temp on the guages??? if its the latter tbh the guages aren't the most accurate of readings......so seeing 90 @ 60mph and 110 round town although worrying isn't actually too bad......still get it checked out tho mfa stuck at 99.9mpg normally means its knackered....... if you've no heat from the heaters sounds like the matrix has been by-passed,so more than likely new matrix needed..........there's sometimes a Lynsey Porter manual on ebay that covers the Corrado as well as Golf mk2/Jetta/Vento
MNuTz 0 Posted September 29, 2006 Sorry, its the water temp im having trouble with. The oil temp is fine!
vr6storm 0 Posted September 29, 2006 Sorry, its the water temp im having trouble with. The oil temp is fine! still get it checked to be on the safe side but by the sounds of it.........its ok..........although i'm speaking more from VR6 experience of worry about water temps........as long as you're not loosing water(other than thru a loose cap) then its not too much of a worry
MNuTz 0 Posted September 29, 2006 yeah, im going to keep an eye on it over the next few days and see if the level drops. It has been mentioned to me that maybe the head gaskets on they way out, it would explain the car not revving properly once i hit 6k revs and the smoke coming out of the back, and the low level of coolant? any truth in it? Im not the most mechanically minded yet but ive a willingness to learn, and ive just had an offer accepted on a house with a huge garage :D So plenty of room to do it now so no excuses! lottysvdub 0 Posted September 30, 2006 my 2ltr 16v sits at around 90 on a run and will get to just below 110 if im stuck in traffic cooling fan always seems to cut in at about 108 , sounds like its the same as mine , just keep an eye on your levels and make sure your fans are kicking in mate :) mine also smokes a little at that rpm range but remember its an older car and you could be looking at a head gasket problem , you can go to any decent garage and get that checked very quickly as most dealers would bave a chemical tester that can test for gases in the coolent system it only take a couple of minutes to check so it could be worth finding some one local to you with one
MNuTz 0 Posted September 30, 2006 well ive been to the only local garage that is open on a sat and they £21.50 and the car for 30 mins! Going to wait until Monday and try the one nearer me as i trust his work a hell of a lot more.
