jonnyboyo 0 Posted October 17, 2006 Hi all. Your vast knowledge is required once more :) Power steering fluid is oozing from the red cap on the reservoir in a bubbly fashion, and the whining noise made when you turn the wheels when not driving is constant now...Is this just a simple case of replacing the cap or is my p/steering pump on its way out? Many thanks.
2corrados 0 Posted October 17, 2006 sounds like my 2.0l 16v when I bought it.Oozing and whining. 120 bucks from eurocarparts , exchange, and now a quiet motor. take the pas belt off first and see if it still makes the noise. if it doesn't then thats the problem, if it does then it must be the rack I reckon Not that difficult to do, when you master the pas pump bracket and tensioner assembly.........have fun Dic

2corrados 0 Posted October 18, 2006 no, but I notice you are from Cardiff way. If your up Blackwood way, about 30 mins from Cardiff, pop in and we'll see if we can't do something about it. Or at least show you where to start Cheers Dic
jonnyboyo 0 Posted October 18, 2006 Excellent!!....I may very well take you up on that soon. I topped the fluid up today ( i no, i no, your not supposed to just top it up!) and the whining has stopped with no fluid loss.....YET. I'll take it on a run soon to see if it starts again coz somethin tells me i aint gonna be this lucky. If the noise returns i'd be grateful if we could attack it with some spanners :) Cheers mate 8)
2corrados 0 Posted October 19, 2006 depending on servicing on your motor, it may well just be that the fluid is ancient and crap. Just draining it and changing it may sort it out.
jonnyboyo 0 Posted October 19, 2006 You could be right there. Its got a full VAG history up until the last 3, which were done by a VW/Audi specialist. The car is currently reading 117,000 miles. Its MOT time end of month so i reckon a fluid change will be in order just in case.

If the pressure valve in the pump sticks then you can end up with the pump contantly pumping fluid to the rack, two things then seem to happen, apart from the constant noise you'll eventually blow the pressure hose at the flex hose joints as that's the weak point and you'll get fluid racing back into the reservoir all the time which can lead to it escaping from the cap.
