Sloppy Gear box

Recommended Posts

Hi All!

I have a 93 vr6 with a sloppy gear box, lots of play when shifting. The actual function is fine, no problems in selecting the correct gear, just wanted to tighten up the feel! Is there anything I can do, or is it a job for the professionals?

Thanks

I think there may be a poly bushes that connect the linkages together.

If they are worn then the gears will be lose. Its nothing to do with the gear box itself.

Try asking at the dealers if there is a kit you can buy to replace them.

Well...

The C has a cable change gear linkage, so the only places where wear can occur are the bushes/spring/retaining clips on the lever, the gearbox mount and the selector mechanism.

The cable ends can also break (at the gearbox end), but these tend to go only as a result of some 'forceful' gear selection when the mechanism is out of adjustment.

The 1st thing to check is that all the circlips holding the gear lever meachanism together are present and correct. Refitting these if they're missing makes a big difference.

I think you might find that you are just experiencing cable change gear sloppiness. Even the tightest and adjusted feel cack.

Rod change is soooooooo much more positive.

I've just had the bushes and gear selector fork replaced on mine and I have to say it feels loike new now - the best C gearbox I've ever had....ring APS in Brackley and they'll tell you what's needed...

what did they want for that, i had a new 2nd gear synchro a few years back, but I think the selector forks and slector mech are past their best now, thinking of a mk4 system and selector tower and getting the box selector forks replaced.

cheers,

David.
