Shaggy 0 Posted May 14, 2007 So what years did the MK3 Golf Diesels come with the CTN Gearbox? Does anyone know?
CTWG60 0 Posted May 14, 2007 Best to just contact the scrapyards and say you "want a late mk3 golf diesel CTN code gearbox". Here is a company with contact details who had a CTN about 4 months ago you could try them. Dan @ Car-Transplants.co.uk 08452 60 38 03 ASD £250+VAT 90 day 75000miles 200+VAT = £235 ?miles CTN £250+VAT = £294 65000miles CYP £ There is a diesel box with a CYP code which has near identical ratios as the CTN aswell. The ASD is a lot taller. Here's a comparison.
Shaggy 0 Posted May 16, 2007 Think i may have found a CTN box, 75k £235 inclusive of Vat, so not too bad.. only thing is its located in essex! 200 mile round trip! Does this gearbox still make the car feel like a sports car? Its not going to make the car feel lazy is it?
_leon_ 0 Posted May 16, 2007 mike - have you decided not to go with a g60 box with vr 1, 2 cogs again?
Shaggy 0 Posted May 16, 2007 i am looking for a cheaper alternative, by the time i ve got another VR box and G60 box and then got all the gears put in, i would prob be looking at £600 in total, it would be nice to find a cheaper alternative that does the same thing.. the CTN box looks at the moment to be the best one. and at £235 its a hell of a lot cheaper...lol And as i do fair bit of motorway driving i like the idea of the lower rpm of the 5th gear at 70 ish... that would also protect the G-lader in the long run, aswell as cut donw a bit of the fuel costs... To be honest I think with the increased torque and power output of a modded G60 then the orginal gearing is completely wrong, if you can't put the power down then there is no point in having it. As such the CTN box does look like an excellent upgrade option.
CTWG60 0 Posted May 16, 2007 Exactly why I changed to the CTN box. Low cost, proper VR ratio 1 & 2 (which a vr 1 and 2 cog swap does not give you unless you have a ATB code box) and the low rpm 5th. As for performance I did a 15.12 sec QMT on my first attempt at santa pod and was leading IHIG60 (350bhp standard g60 box) till the 1/8mile mark. In 4th you will find it a little slower if you time it before and after, but you can change down to 3rd below 80mph and hit 96ish super quick. 5th is alot taller hence the low rpm cruising speed and is not good for overtaking or quick acceleration, again you can change down to 4th below 120 mph and hit 135 mph quick. With the old box I could get to OOoops mph but new box only lets me hit ohdearmph which is probably a good thing. I'm being as honest as possible with the above and are obviously based on my mods which have all lowered the torque curve in the rev. range. Good luck with the swap don't forget to get the cable bracket on top of the box and if they haven't already removed it tell them to be careful with the plastic driver on the change mech. , only £7.00 from a dealer and easily broken. CTWG60 0 Posted May 16, 2007 Gotta be worth it just for being able to do full throttle acceleration to the red line on a wet day like today without wheelspin :)

junkie 0 Posted May 16, 2007 Gotta be worth it just for being able to do full throttle acceleration to the red line on a wet day like today without wheelspin :) And tonight it was still spinning easily in 3rd on 1.1bar not good. Turn down boost to 0.5bar and alls good again no spinning anymore but boringly progressive and slow to drive. :( I need a new box

Shaggy 0 Posted May 18, 2007 Just got the box delivered today! seems pretty damn good tbh! one thing i was wondering tho... the shift mech.. can i not just leave the cables alone and take the entire shift mechanism out from my 02A G60 box and then fit it to the CTN gearbox..? wouldnt have to mess around with cable setup then would i? Dont think i am going to get around to fitting the box for a few weeks yet as i have a few other things to sort out first.. so just guna clean it up and give it a coat of hammerite smooth black spray paint for the time being untill its fitted! 8)

I thought about doing that, even removed the bolts only to discover the shift tower was bonded/sealed to the rest of the box so I bottled out of try to split them and did it the hard way. Give it a go and let us know!
Shaggy 0 Posted May 18, 2007 I undid the bolts on the CTN box and the tower mech came straight out no probs...? maybe i was just lucky... 8)
CTWG60 0 Posted May 18, 2007 Nice one, should be even easier to fit. Errm just remembered there is an extra bolt hole for the different cable bracket which will allow oil and grime into the bell housing so best to find a bolt or something to plug it up. :)
Shaggy 0 Posted May 18, 2007 Will get that plugged asap! cheers
Shaggy 0 Posted May 26, 2007 Just fitted my CTN Diesel box... All i can say is.....OMG!! what a difference! The traction is unbelievable! Easily 65mph in second now...All gears feel very smooth!! May need a bit more adjustment to get perfect gear change but i am well happy!!!!! Havent had chance to test out fifth gear yet at cruising speeds .. i ve only just finished fitting it!.lol will give that a go on Sunday after i ve given the car another checkover. Thanks CTW for all you research...Top Man!!!
