Critical_Mass 10 Posted March 16, 2007 Hi all, My VR6 is burning oil like a good un, about a litre every 300miles. I wanting to get the engine reconditioned or exchanged for a reconditioned unit. Ive found a place in London (Heathrow area) that do recondition engines who have quoted me £1590 to recondition my existing engine and includes fitting, OR £1900 for one of their engines, inc fitting but only if i exchange my current engine. Do these prices sound about right? However, i would ideally want to get it sorted somewhere closer to home. I live in Leeds, so if anyone knows of a garage they can recommend where i can get the engine reconditioned or anyother advice i would be grateful! Cheers Gaz
fla 9 Posted March 16, 2007 Why not drop in a 24V instead?

JIMMI 0 Posted March 16, 2007 Hi mate im up in sunderland and i have a few reconditioned VR engines in my garage, ive just sold one to MR-FUSION on here and i have one more left. Im not too far away (bout 90 - 100 miles) i could fit it if you require but i'd need the car for a couple of days. PM me for more info if you like Jimmi......................... Critical_Mass 10 Posted March 16, 2007 Hi Jimmi, appreciate the offer mate. Im awaiting some cash to come through. I cant guarantee itll in the next week or even month. So if its still available when the money DOES finally come through ill get in touch with you. How much would you be wanting for the engine and fitting? MK1Campaign 0 Posted March 16, 2007 Sounds far too cheap to me. Proper VR6 rebuilds usually come in at around the 3k mark.
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted March 17, 2007 And piston supplies from Mahle are extremely limited at the moment. Could take weeks to get a set. 82.5mm Mahles, bearings, rings, chain gear etc is a grand before you even take the lump out of the car and inspect the crank / bore the block etc. So yes, those prices are indeed cheap, and you know what they say about things that seem too cheap.... eatthis 0 Posted March 17, 2007 do the actual pistons wear much or is it just the rings/bores usually?
Critical_Mass 10 Posted March 18, 2007 ... this is going to be more expensive then initially thought :( Ill hav eabout half that about of cash. What other options do i have?
Stan 24v 0 Posted March 18, 2007 I was quoted justr over two grand for a rebuild from PSI tuning. However, I dint pay that much more for the 24v conversion. He's not far from you either mate, Stoke. I know which option I'd be going for ;)

Critical_Mass 10 Posted March 18, 2007 It'd be worth speaking to Andy at PSI then. Ive got in touch with Jimmi regarding a VR he's got for sale.
Rob Heath 0 Posted March 18, 2007 You sure its the bottom end?? 115k isnt a lot of mileage for a vr!! Maybe its the top end, valve stem seals etc????
Critical_Mass 10 Posted March 18, 2007 115k isnt a lot of mileage for a vr!! Maybe its the top end, valve stem seals etc???? Correction on the mileage, it was 115k when i bought it, its now at 121k Yeah its the top end. I do suspect the valve stem seals. But im not sure if theres a slight knocking at the bottom end too. But without knowing 100% what a knocking bottom end sounds like im not sure. Plus as said above it feels down on power. The revs have to get to about 3k before any power kicks in. Its a right dog to drive, especially in traffic. Would it be a wise idea to get it on a RR to see what the power output is?
Stan 24v 0 Posted March 18, 2007 If im right, wasnt he the brains behind awesome?? Yep Critical_Mass dont bother mate. Just drive down to Stoke and he'll more than likely tell you in about 30 seconds what the problem is likely to be. When I went there I'd been to a local VAG "specialist" and they couldnt even hear anything from my engine. Andy told me within a few seconds that it was bottom end knocking. He'll sort you out mate, no probs.
Critical_Mass 10 Posted March 18, 2007 Cheers Stan 24v. You got contact details, or web address? So the knocking noise, isnt necessarily going to be an obvious noise. The noise I THINK i can hear is very very quiet and not a blatent sound.
Rob Heath 0 Posted March 18, 2007 Heatshield, exhaust??????
Critical_Mass 10 Posted March 18, 2007 Heatshield, exhaust?????? Ill check that, you think could be loose? Saying that, ive only noticed the knocking noise in the last week or so. Are the heat sheilds known for knocking, its not knocking when im going over bumps, just general driving.
