Why 268's?

Recommended Posts

I'm in the process of looking for a set of cam's for my VR but I didn't realise there was quite so much choice!

I can't justify the money for Schrick so I've been looking around, mainly across the pond at what other options are available and there seem to be some absolute bargains out there, my question is though why have all the VR owners running cams gone for 268 duration appose to 262's or 270's etc

Also if I have the rocker cover off and I'm looking down at the cam's, how hard are they to replace for an amatuer spanner monkey? And is a remap essential after or can I just slap in a Giac 268 chip and be done with it.

Sorry for all the questions but it's better to be addicted to BHP then alcohol or animal porn :)

They offer the best compromise of power at the top end without losing too much bottom end.

As for fitting them, if your at the rocker cover off stage then very easy, hardest part is cracking the bolts holding the camgears on loose. If you can get both of them undone then you can slide one cam out at a time with someone else holding the gear in place so the timing doesnt even get interupted.

Just make sure youve got a torque wrench for putting everything back together properly, there is a certain order in which the cams have to be torqued up.

You might get away with a giac chip if they do one for a 2.9, but remember american corrado vr's used the golf 2.8 engine so it wouldnt be great if thats the only chip they do.

I'm sure you've found them too but the cheapest 268s i saw when looking are from John Dougherty (DRCams.com) who quoted me $320 direct plus $80 shipping. They're more expensive if you go through a uk importer obviously.. (about £260-70) He does do regrinds too though so make sure you get ones that are original grinds..

otherwise look out for 2nd hand too.. :D

Ok all good stuff, thanks for the info.

Look's like if I'm going to do it I might as well get it done properly and go for 268's then, I saw those John Dougherty ones so I'm pretty tempted.

Thanks for the heads-up on the Giac chip too, I'll check before jumping in both feet first. Just desperately wan't to get close to the 220bhp mark so I can tell cossie owners to get a life and buy something more refined 8)

Leons got a set of 263's, new from a recent group, in the for sale section at the moment for £195 I think. These are apparently good for NA of forced induction VR's.

Yeah I saw those, I'd be all over them in a shot but it's an end of the month payday kinda situation I'm in. If they're still about then I'll be joining Cam club definately.
