91 G60 Rear Callipers

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to confirm which callipers are best suited to a 91 G60. Mk 3 or Mk 4 items, and what other bits are needed.

Gus.

I think the later Mk3s are better as I have heard that the Mk4 have a bigger piston therefore are a little more powerful.

You dont want the back locking up to early you see.

If the pistons are bigger on a MK4 caliper, you'll introduce a longer brake pedal because of the extra fluid needed.

The MK3s would be my favourite and they are a bit cheaper too I think.

big advantage of the mk4 is they're all alloy, apparently

no rusting, no seizing of the damn handbrake mechnsm.

Unfortunately you also need a convertor brake line to attach a mk 4 caliper to a mk3-type fitting. Apparently the attachment is larger.

I have replaced a number of expired cast rear callipers on both Corrados and Golfs with the alloy Mk4 callipers, including my own Corrado which uses TT callipers with 280mm vented discs. The only results from this conversion are positive ones. The alloy callipers are far more resistant to the effects of corosion and fit with ease using the same spec pads. The brake lines are easily adapted to accomodate the banjo fittings onto the calliper. This upgrade is thoroughly reccomended and furthermore is not expensive direct from the dealer.
