Things Mechanics' say to fill you with confidence?!

Recommended Posts

Yesterday the girlfriend finished work and tried to start her LEON to get home, only to be met with a mass flashing of warning lights on the dashboard. I was stuck at work so she rang the AA.

The mechanic guy comes out, has a look round the car, my girlfriend gives him all the details of the car, make, model, etc. He opens the bonnet and has a look round, "ah yes, these diesel SEAT's are a bit prone to electrical shortages".

Girlfriend answers, "Erm, actually its petrol". :D

I rang an 'engine specialist' about a possibly rebuild on my valver. I explained it was a 1990 valver, KR lump, same as in the mk2 golf. His reply was "ah yes, is it the turbo or the diesel model?"

Suffice to say he didnt get the job!

Some people might say its harsh to expect him to know this, but you would have thought an 'engine specialist' would have seen a KR lumo before!

hey there not all bad , mechanics that is

did you know you only get a job with the AA because you are no good at being a mechanic slightest problem and its " where would you like your car taken to madam/sir "

and as for your engine specialist he sounds like a top man :cuckoo: may be he is a good valet :)

A mechanic my dad always used (who, to be fair was always pretty good) was entrusted with fixing my sunroof on my G60. They had it for about 4 days and worked on it SOLID and in the end only charged me about £120 - and even got down to cleaning the headlining, etc before they put it back in. I think I tipped them about 30 quid out of sheer delight as the same work at VW would have cost me probably a thousand pounds.

Anyway - when the car was in their workshop they had the bonnet up and the old guy / owner was looking in the engine bay and said "So who fitted the blower to it?" referring to the supercharger - I told him it was a factory thing and that the G60 was an original VW design, but they just didn't last that long - he was pretty surprised! On the flip side, at least he could tell it had a supercharger on it! :)

Talking of G60s, the parts guy in Eurocanterbury VW told me there was no such thing as a G60 Corrado when I wanted to order a speaker grille, to which I replied 'Erm, yes there is. Mine's parked outside- want a look?' He looked very sheepish!

I brought my C to an official VW service here in Barcelona, and after one week they just phoned me and said "We cannot repair it. We can't give you a 2-year warranty, and we should do it. so please, come here today and take it away"

and I was like   :salute:

It is definitely annoying when you know more than the mechanic does! That's why I just do everything I possibly can (i.e. doesn't need specialist tools) to our own cars.

That happened to me at our local VW dealers in Guildford. I went in to pick up a trim strip for a friends Rado, I had driven mine there and parked it outside but when I asked for the part I was told that there was no such thing as a Volkswagen Corrado, I pointed out I had driven my Corrado there and it was outside and I even walked over to the window where you could see my car from and pointed but he still tried to say there was no such thing as a Corrado....

 Its not just wet behind the ears parts people and dim mechanics that aint got a clue,

When i was looking for a VR6 Golf 5 years ago, i went past Robert Miles VW "Specialist" entered his forecourt in Sidcup one saturday afternoon as i saw he had a blue VR

Started to have a look at the car, (quickly realised it was a shedder, not one pain of glass was original or matched  ) but just asked him, out of curiosity more than anything, what part ex he would give me for my Rallye golf

He proceeded to say "ooooh not much" how much is not much i say?...."Hundreds" he says, hundreds i say? yeah £300 he replies  I ask, you do know what that is dont you? pointing at it parked 10 foot away? yeah he says i have sold loads of them.........eeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrr yyyyyeeeeer I dont think so  bye loser

sold the Rallye for 5k 3 days later  now either he is proper dim (my guess) or hes not quite the "specialist car salesman" he thinks he is!!

Just been down to a VW dealer in kettering, Started by asking how much it would cost to get a service ( Too much, I know but I wasn't sure ) The bloke tapped the keyboard for a bit looked at a few lists then said he didn't seem to have a price. I enquired about a few parts, we chatted for a while, I told him the spec etc.... he then asked if it was a standard VR6 or the G60

LOL Tit! Another nice Rallye tale was a mate of mine parked called into his local VW Stealers to pick up some parts! Parked the Rallye outside the main showroom. a couple of the salesmen go out to have a look at it! After a good mooch one of them comes up to my mate with a grin, conversation goes like this:

Saleman "Is that your golf outside?"

Mate "Yup, nice isn't it, bet you don't see many of those these days?"

Saleman "Well not with those bodykits fitted no, plus you need to have a word with whoever did it as they've fitted the wrong headlamps, Golfs should have round ones"

My mate just looked at the Parts Guy, who shook his head in disbelief.......

There are some proper 'Tards who class themselves as VW Salesman these days!!!!

I have a few entries:

- "Well I've taken a quick look and I don't think it's going to be a big job"

- "Don't worry about that too much"

- "I've never seen one of these do that before"

- "Can I have for a few days to really check it over & I'll give you a call"

speaking from the mechanics side (being one)

my favourite from customers is " hi there i have a little job for you it wont take you long "

well if you know how long its going to take , you must be able to do the job , so if thats the case fuck off and do it and dont tell me how long its going to take me todo :salute:
