Critical_Mass 10 Posted July 24, 2008 Its a VR6 and I need to buy some oil in next 10 mins and Im doubting myself :D Is 6L enough? Thanks Matt I think the handbook quotes 5.5L including filter change. 6L will easily be enough. Hope that helps, or is the response too late?

Critical_Mass 10 Posted July 24, 2008 Doh! Cheers guy's (hangs head in shame) Just need to decide wether to stick with the Synta Silver or go for silly price Silkolene :? The synta silver is good oil as is the gold and Oilman rates the Silkolene. The more you spend in the way of decent oil etc will save you money in the long run. My next oil change will be with Silkolene.
Leonard 0 Posted July 24, 2008 Yeah I know what you are saying. Car has done 83k miles all on Synta Silver and it doesnt really use a drop. Only issues I have are high temps on the motorway ie 120 deg+ then again perhaps I should just stick to the speed limit LOL
dinkus 10 Posted July 24, 2008 TBH, I feel much more comfortable using cheapo Synta Silver (£10 for 5L from TPS) and changing it every 6 months rather than forking out £60+ for Silkolene or whatever and changing it less often. The engine never gets that hot, so standard oil won't break down and if you change it more often it flushes the crud out.
mattkh 0 Posted July 24, 2008 Synta Silver (£10 for 5L from TPS) Even nopwadays! Gosh that isgood value. Who are TPS.

Am I doing any long term damage though running the engine with oil temps over 120 when Synta silver is only good up to 120 deg. Doesnt happen that often but I do have 120+ on the MFA for periods of 45 mins plus every now and again. Oil only gets changed every 12 months but I do only 3-4k a year
dinkus 10 Posted July 24, 2008 TPS are VAG's trade branch. You can sign up for an account if you're a member of the Corrado Club of GB and you get parts club prices on "consumable" parts like oil, filters, bushes, gaskets and such. http://www.thetradepartsspecialists.co.uk/ If you're getting the engine fairly hot, then it's probably a good idea to change the oil more regularly. Especially if your drives are often short trips to the shops or whatever as the oil (and engine) take the most abuse when cold.

True so taking that into account I would really be better with a 10W 50 oil? Or would I not because the extra weight would mean it would lube so well until hot :? dinkus 10 Posted July 24, 2008 I'm not really an expert, but the colder the oil is, the thicker it is. However, the better the oil is, the less it changes as it heats up. oilman has done some really good posts on everything you could ever want to know about oil, so it's worth having a search for his posts and having a read :)

Used to drive tuned Evo's so even more important to get it right then and oilman gave plenty of good advise about that. All I ever really seemed to get though was that the more it cost the better it was  LOL
dinkus 10 Posted July 24, 2008 Hehe, TBH I don't really see the point in splurging megabucks on an unmodified car, especially when I can pickup normal oil for cheap and change it more often. If I had a turbo and/or highly tuned engine and/or did track days, that'd be a whole different kettle of fish...

dinkus 10 Posted July 24, 2008 I'd like to point out that putting fish in your engine is neither good for the engine or the fish...
Critical_Mass 10 Posted July 24, 2008 I'd like to point out that putting fish in your engine is neither good for the engine or the fish... Damn thats that idea out of the window then. Dom you said £10 a litre, from TPS. Call me stupid, but who are TPS? How much is the Synta gold?

Never knew we could get an account! What do I do? Rign em up and say i'm a ccgb member and give them my number or something? Or is there a specific number to ring? Leonard 0 Posted July 25, 2008 Do they deliver to your house or do you pick up from your nearest VW dealer? Just spent £100 there yesterday :(

dinkus 10 Posted July 25, 2008 To set up an account, you phone your local branch and blag it from there. They deliver to you (for free), but it needs to be a registered business address - they don't deliver to private addresses. You usually get 10% on everything, then a bigger parts club discount on all consumable parts - prices for which are on the TPS website (once you've got an account).
