Son_of_Thor 0 Posted October 1, 2008 Hi, The oil filter housing on my VR6 is cracked where the molded nut meets the main part of the housing. The housing itself appears to be non-standard as it doesn't have a drain plug through the middle of it (which I understand to be standard). The car is a '92 VR6 with an ABV engine - can anyone help?! The current filter housing looks like this: Cheers Si
Jim Bowen 1 Posted October 1, 2008 that looks the same as mine from what i remember
Son_of_Thor 0 Posted October 1, 2008 So if the filter housing is standard should this mean the standard replacement from VW should fit (even though it has a drain plug through the middle)? Do you use the standard oil filter with yours (i.e. with the drain through the middle)?
Goldie 2 Posted October 1, 2008 That looks like mine fitted to a 95 ABV. Yip, standard filter fitted...
Jim Bowen 1 Posted October 1, 2008 isn't the silver/metal bit shown with the allen key socket, the drain plug?
Goldie 2 Posted October 1, 2008 I think it is mate but tbh when ive done the oil on mine i dont bother with it and just whip the cap itself off..
Jim Bowen 1 Posted October 1, 2008 thats what i do too , tried the allen key and seemed like effort so just undid the whole thing instead. isn't too messy really

Jim Bowen 1 Posted October 1, 2008 certainly looks right to me. but i haven't taken the allen key bit out so not sure what it looks like without it
Son_of_Thor 0 Posted October 1, 2008 Cheers. Can anyone who's removed the allen key bit tell me if this looks right?
Roger Blassberg 0 Posted October 6, 2008 Yes, that looks normal. If you do take the drain plug out, put it back in before undoing the plastic casing. The metal plug strengthens the casing when applying the torque to the hexagon. best wishes RB
