2ltr 16v Radiator

Recommended Posts

hi everyone,

The radiator is leaking badly on my 2ltr 16v and i need a new one,

Are there any other cars in the VW range that share the same rad? Golfs? Mk's / engine types?

thinking of visiting the scrappy at the weekend to see if theres any good second hand ones.

If not i'll get a new one.

cheers

Sadly it's Corrado only I believe. £110ish from VW, apparently the pattern parts aren't good quality.

Not seen you around for a long time? How're things?

GSF do a pattern parts one for approximately £36 but it's pretty pants quality. I'd strongly suggest biting the bullet and buying a genuine VAG one at the price Toady says. I bought a pattern one but struggled to get it to seal around the radiator thermo switch.. the OEM is still made by the original manufacturers and should be good for many many years to come so a fit and forget part!

mk2 16v Golf or Jetta have the same rad, a genuine one will have a Denso Marsden label with the part number with an 'L' suffix on the top under the plastic safety cover.

A passat 16v one will also fit, but it's a longer radiator so you'd need the top and bottom radiator hoses with it.

VAG want about 120 quid for a new one.

I just bought a radiator for my 1.8 16v yesterday from GSF - £28 + VAt -

I know it is a pattern part - but if it lasts a couple of years I'm happy with that.

It only takes 20 mins to fit as well. i already have the old one out - ready to fit the new one.

But at that price - it is cheap.

Normally I steer clear of pattern parts but in this case I'll make an exception!

It's not so much the quality or longevity of the GSF rads that worried me, I had one which didn't have the same problems as others have found, it was more the fact that it's not a 16V radiator at all, it has fewer and different shaped cross tubes and is not as efficient at cooling as a proper VW one, you'll be OK in the UK weather generally but if your car is tuned, cams etc it's not worth the risk of cooking it. It's really a 1.6 carb mk2 golf part, just happens to be 430mm long.

Good luck! if you're EXTREMELY lucky it might actually fit, but will be as david wort says. The ones I've had never sit on the support panel properly. Shame you didn't do a bit of research, this has been covered a lot on the forum.

There's a reason for that...

Very bad move my friend. Next time, use the search.

I've bought pattern radiators from a specialist radiator supplier in the past and they've been fine.

I know you're trying to be helpful, but that comes across as horrifically condescending.

I have a bee in my bonnet about pattern radiators. Surely that's obvious by now!

hi Boost,

no problemo - I know pattern stuff is shite - but it is a spare Corrado - I only use it when the VR's are not working. So it doesn't cover many miles in a year - so buying an OEM radiator is not justified.

Yes it did fit Ok - but then again my valver is a 1.8 - probably because its the same rad as a golf MKII

I too have a bee in my bonnet regarding pattern ECP wheel bearings, engine mounts - 3 months tops is what you get out of them!
