carter711 0 Posted December 12, 2008 After having a pressure test done on my cooling system it would seem i have a pinhole leak on my radiator, my car keeps on leaking its coolant pretty much everytime i drive it and topping it up with antifreeze all the time is getting expensive!!! So i need to get it sorted.... VW have quoted me £196 + VAT for a new one, does anyone know of anywhere i can buy the same for cheaper? Or, how much might a re-core cost? I think i'm going to replace the thermostat whilst i am there, they aren't very expensive. Any tips or advice etc very much appreciated. Cheers! Toad 0 Posted December 12, 2008 Are you sure it's not the thermostat housing that is leaking? Even if it isn't you should look to replace it when changing the thermostat. The VR radiators should be cheaper than that, more like £150. I don't believe you can get them recored, as they have plastic end tanks.
pete_griff 0 Posted December 12, 2008 where abouts in the country are you - if you're anywhere near me (hereford) i have a good relationship with a shop that specialises in fuel tanks and radiators... if not, when you do the thermostat, it might be worth budgeting to do the housing at the same time. depending on how old your car is/mileage etc - they get brittle and crack with age, so if you go taking it apart, then it may well break. i'm not sure how much they cost to replace, but it might be worth doing anyway to to avoid any future issues... Jim Bowen 1 Posted December 12, 2008 i've had all that joy too  you can get some discount from VW making it £180, still a lot of money, but i was told they are better than non-VW ones. Also worth noting that i kept having coolant leaks, replaced one thing and another starting, so ended up renewing the whole system :( = expensive if you can't resist a bit of bling
pete_griff 0 Posted December 12, 2008 i have a friend with an evo 4 whos rad went. they are not only rare, but horrificly expensive - i think his had plastic ends on (not certain, but from what i remember...) and my friend at the above mentioned place, re-cored it with no dramas... edit - i lied - it was a celica gt4, not an evo
carter711 0 Posted December 13, 2008 How do you get a discount from VW to get the rad at £180? Does anyone know who makes the VW rad? At the moment the options are either buy one from VW or but one from Euro Car Parts at £150. I wondering if there will much difference in the rads.
