zak 0 Posted May 8, 2009 There was 2 tubes of camshaft assembly lube enlcosed with my 263 cams, whats it used for? Do i just apply a smear on each lobe? Do i have to follow a running in procedure for the cams?
vwdeviant 0 Posted May 8, 2009 From memory yes... it's there to protect them on inital start up before the engine oil reaches them... Should explain that in the instructions?
Toad 0 Posted May 8, 2009 I cleaned all the ones I fitted thoroughly with petrol, and applied lots of nice clean oil to them before dropping them in, applied more oil, and fitted the cam caps. Didn't bother with the assembly lube, but did wind the engine over on the starter for a while to make sure that plenty of oil got pumped round... On my new install i did the same as above. If you have just taken the head off your system will still be primed anyway so just lavish it with plenty of oil and maybe kick it around on the starter a few. zak 0 Posted May 8, 2009 okay so no need to use the lube then, it is a new head so i'll get the oil pumping round before i start it. I just took the sprockets off a spare set of cams i had and the trigger wheel cracked on the rear cam. Seraching shows its a cheap part but is it dealer only or can i get it from gsf? Im running on a tight schedule and can't get hold of the guys at the local dealer parts desk.

zak 0 Posted May 8, 2009 i thought i had thought of everything but just came across this issue. If vw don't have stock then I have 2 more sets of cams i can try to take the sprockets from and hope the sensor comes of intact if not then i can put the engine back together bar the cams and order the part and put the rest of the engine back together during the week. Chris 0 Posted May 12, 2009 i lubed up my 263's and lifter tops with the moly lube supplied and then gave the cams plent of oil on top filling the pools. cranked it a couple of times then ran them in at 2k for about 20mins till engine was at working temp. avoid idle on new cams when they are run up for the first time. hope you get on ok with that rear sprocket, its one tight little bastarrd!! my old cam came off second best against the vice it was in :D Chris
zak 0 Posted May 12, 2009 thanks for the tip, i have the cams fitted already, i was waiting on a cam trigger wheel to come in today before i run the engine. The new style trigger wheels are a much better design being part metal where they are secured by the bolt.
