ANDREW 30 0 Posted May 21, 2009 I've been browsing the opie oils site but he's got a rather large sellection, which of his engine oils would you recommend i get? Also which gearbox oil? Cheers Andrew
Leonard 0 Posted May 21, 2009 Redline MT90 for your gearbox And personally I still swear by the VW Synta Silver semi synthetic stuff for the engine. As long as you are not tracking the car it should easily be up to the job. Plus its less than half the price of a quality synthetic so you can change it twice as often! Plus I have heard that the detergents in fully synthetic oil can break down some of the oily waxy build up on engine seals and make minor leaks more likely on older engines

Kevin Bacon 5 Posted May 22, 2009 /\ I use and swear by Silkolene 10W/50 Pro S. Opie Oils have an 'up to 30%' off promotion this weekend. I've used it on standard aswell as highly modified VR6s and it's the best oil yet, and I've used pretty much everything out there.

Can get Synta Silver for about £15, inc VAT.

Especially for new high performance cars. But I still think it's overkill for an old std VR6. May be a little different mind with your engine Kev

You'd be surprised! When mine was standard it used to smoke on the over-run coming off motorway slip roads etc. Used to get a nice little puff of blue when pulling away. I switched to the Silkolene in the interests of a "slightly thicker oil might solve it experiment", and it did, completely! :D I just think that with an engine that's very prone to bore wear, it's better to use a good quality oil, rather than the stuff they pour into 1.4 Golfs and Polos

Yeah from the stealers..its either there or halfords for oil for me without having to drive missions...but £10 more is a joke, would be much happier if i could get if for £15! where is yours from? Neil VR6 0 Posted May 28, 2009 The 100% synthetic stuff I got from Opie has really cut down my car’s oil consumption to next to zero. I was pouring that cruddy old semi-synth stuff in at the rate of about a litre every 500-1000 miles but the new oil is so much better.
