STU175 0 Posted June 14, 2009 Hi All, as in the title i was on my way to the vw show @stonham barns yesterday when my front left drive shaft started making a grinding noise then lost all drive!! on inspection i found the drive shaft has come out of the gear box :confused4: i didnt think the drive shaft should have enuf play in and out to do this? i checked the cv and seems ok, doesnt twist just in and out so tapped it back in looked all the way home and had drive again. i drove it a short distance and it started to come out again? can any one shed any light on this? am i missing some thing? oh car is a corrado 1991 g60 thnx stu
Toad 0 Posted June 14, 2009 What do you mean "Come out of the gearbox"? Has the flange pulled out of the diff? Or the driveshaft pulled out of the CV joint?
STU175 0 Posted June 14, 2009 the flange has come out of the gearbox
Toad 0 Posted June 14, 2009 Ok. It should have a circlip in a groove which locates in the diff. My guess is that has come out... If the driveshaft comes too far out of the gearbox you will loose all the oil.
STU175 0 Posted June 14, 2009 yes i have lost oil ive took the drive shaft out hub end as well now and cant see a circlip on the gear box end? where is it ment to be?
Toad 0 Posted June 14, 2009 There is a machined groove near the end of the splined shaft attached to the flange, it sits in there, and then you need to press the flange into the box. You need to find the old circlip first though....
STU175 0 Posted June 14, 2009 just had a fish around in side the gearbox and no sign of a circlip :confused4: hopefully fell out when the drive shaft did. wot do you reckon put on a new circlip and put it back in???? and refill oil obviously would a drive shaft off a 1995 2.0 16v be the same i think ive got a knackerd one in my shed some where? hopefully with a circlip
boost monkey 0 Posted June 14, 2009 IIRC No, the 16v driveshafts aren't as thick as the G60 ones.
STU175 0 Posted June 17, 2009 i picked up the circlip today from vw to find it was alot smaller than i thought! i thought it went a bit further down the flange not right on the end!!?? am i right in thinking the lip has worn off the end where its supposed to go or have vw given me the wrong part?? has anyone got a photo of one so i know what its ment to look like :( DSCI0483.JPG[/attachment:aee09fww] this is mine
