Johnkerry 0 Posted June 29, 2009 Hi, my Vw dealer finally got my new crank pulley bolt so i can start getting the car put back together. I went to get some thread lock today and found out there are two different sorts the red which is permanent and has to be heated to be removed or the blue which can be undone by hand tools, the question is which one do people use ? Ive only used the red before and i thought that's all there was and I'm sure Ive undone bolts which red with out heating it before. Also I'm fitting a new rocker cover gasket should i use a sealant ? The engine is a G60 , Any opinions would be great. thanks.
odub 0 Posted June 29, 2009 red is strong and blue is medium. personally i'd use red on studs and thing you don't want coming undone in a hurry. use blue on bits that come off more often. i've never put sealant on a rocker cover gasket, a new one should seal up fine by itself. hope that helps
Johnkerry 0 Posted June 30, 2009 `Thanks very much for that m8, i just wanted to check as the crank is very important, i was just abit worried about having to heat it to undo the red. Also is there a torque setting for the rocket cover nuts? I have got a bentley manual on CD but it doesnt seem to work with Vista.
steveo29 0 Posted July 1, 2009 does the bolt not have thread lock on it already ? pretty sure mine did
davidwort 0 Posted July 1, 2009 depending on the type of crank pulley bolt, I thought it was oiled rather than 'thread-locked' ? there's a stretch and a reusable version IIRC
