New/recon gearbox...what are my options? ***Updated***

Hi guys,

 

I recently had both front wheel bearings replaced by Volkswagen in the UK. When they had the car they told me that there was a slight noise coming from the gearbox and that I had to monitor this (they changed the gearbox oil while they were at it too).

 

So now a month or so later and I notice I get a slight droning, similar to the noise when i had the wheel bearing needed replacing, but I'm sure its only when I'm turning left at speeds over 50kph. :confused4:

 

To cover myself, what costs am I looking at for a new or reconditioned gearbox, including labour? The car is a 1995 Corrado VR6 with 95,000miles on the clock with no engine mods.

There are a few places that do rebuilds, but getting a good place can be tricky. Try asking DG Autotech, as they have a place around the corner and would be able to do the removal/refitting for you I expect.

Sounds like it isnt the gearbox if its only when turning!

 

I'd looking into wheel bearings again and then other sauspension compnents like brakes and possibly drive shafts for wear. my corrado would grind on right turns was the disc on the caliper due to worn wheel bearing.

 

As for a gear box rebuild, ask any vw turner in this country and they pretty well all send them to a vw main dealer, I can recomend a chap in somerset near wellington who will do a top job but it will cost about as much as any main dealer.

Looks like its both rear wheel bearings :censored: I've just had both front ones replaced! Am ordering the parts through Volkswagen Monday, hope I can get them fitted before I go round the 'ring Saturday!

Got the car back from Volkswagen today and they say that its either:

 

1. The drivers side driveshaft that connects to the gearbox, however, they're unsure as a driveshaft fault would make a 'heavier/more clunky' noise.

 

2. The gearbox is about to die and a bearing in the gearbox needs replacing.

 

They offered me a replacement gearbox for about £1550 including fitting or my mate has offered me his Passat VR6 gearbox (are they the same?!) for 50 Euros.

 

How much does it cost to get these things refurbished?!

Yeah, it did seem expensive. They're is a place about 2hrs away from me in Holland who rebuilds gearboxes, but whats the average cost for rebuilding a standard VR6 gearbox?

 

The Passat gearbox I've been offered has done about 150,000km's. As for my own gearbox, the oil was changed in June. I believe that the oil in the gearbox is supposed to be for life, but there is no harm in changing it really - especially as most Corrado's are at least 15 years old now.

There's a gearbox rebuild specialist near me called Gearlink Services in Alderbury,who charged me £350+VAT to recondition my gearbox. Really nice people who really know there stuff and don't charge the earth....

Anyone know if the Passat VR6 gearbox has the same ratio's of that in a Corrado VR6? Think I'm also going to replace the clutch at the same time. :(

SOunds like maybe the diff bearing witht eh extra load from the drive shaft pulling on it when turning maybe?

 

With regards to the cost of a gearbox refurbish rather bluntly you get what you pay for, I have been told by many different people that with these gearboxes if you change one bearing you change them all!! which i can tell you will cost way more than £350, 2 syncro rings and 2 seals cost me 57 quid alone.

 

Id say around the £600-£700 mark is about right for a sensible non genuine recon

 

You coudl try a cheaper one but from experence with gearboxes at my work 9 out of 10 cheap rebuilds are trash

 

Id say try your mates passat box or just the drive shaft first as less work

absolutely!

and the individual parts are very expensive from VW, it's not so much the rubuild work as the cost of the components that makes up the lions share of the bill, so far better to get a gearbox builder with a good reputation to do it, as the cost (if all the necessary bits are replaced) will be much the same. Cheap rebuild can only be missing parts!

Its worth doing if you've no record of it being done mate, It's easy enough to do.

I've decided to fit my mates Passat VR6 gearbox to my car (and hope to God that the ratio's are the same) for the time being, buy a new clutch and new slave cylinder thing from Vindis Volkswagen in Cambridge when I'm back in the UK next week.

 

In the meantime, I'm going to have to sell my beloved Jaguar XJ6 to help pay for my gearbox rebuild. Gutted. :(
