VR6Pete 0 Posted October 20, 2011 Small Update :) Some of the bits in the engine bay were looking a little rough... soooo off to the sand blasters and powder coaters... The condition of the fan cowel wasnt brilliant, and did blow through in areas when being sand blasted... :( but i thought it would have been alot worse!!! VR6Pete 0 Posted October 24, 2011 Had a good weekend on the Corrado :) I've now 95% rebuilt the fan assembely, I'm just waiting on a ring guide to come from Germany before I can re-fit to my new radiator - which my new one did come on Friday, but due to a manufacuing fault with the tank being fitted upside down, its been sent back this morning and i'm currently awaiting a new one to be sent out... but the chaps have been really good and helpful.. Here is the fan assembely; I've now rebuilt the OBD 2 inlet manifold, just need to give a final buffing before fitting and finish polishing a few bolts... bit fitted the throttle body, new gasket and new bolts to that :) Big update on the inside of the car tooo.... finally finished putting the interior back together! Fitted a new screen demister bowden cable due to it being kinked, which caused the old heater controls to fail. fitted new clips on the other bowden cables, and re-installed the heater controls, this was like a surgical procedure putting it back together. The bowden cables where a pain in the a$$ as they were right up in the dash... To finish off the interior, I installed my new head unit, so all good now!! Just about to order a new front silencer today, another 63 quid. but last of the big spend on it for a while I think :) 12th / 13th November will be the weekend of the OBD2 upgrade and fitting the new gearbox, front silencer, and re-fitting radiator! VR6Pete 0 Posted November 15, 2011 Well, its been a funny old weekend.... First of all on Friday I received a phone call saying the 3.68 FD gearbox had been stolen, so that was that out the window this weekend, which in hind sight was good as the work to do the OBD2 upgrade was under estimated... Here's a tip for anyone who turns their OBD1 corrado to OBD2.... get the imob delete done!! As I had all the imobiliser bits, it should have 'just worked' famous last words.... We had issues with the imobiliser kicking in... almost text book... This arrived Friday, lovely bit of kit for those who dont have one, well worth getting (cheers FishWick).. Taking the front end off was needed as I have a new lower inlet manifold inlet manifold and needed to fit my new alternator pulley.... it also made it alot easier in general :) so, here we have a photo with inlet manifold off, all the OBD1 engine harness removed.... tony had a lot of fun trying to get the servo out so could get the loom through the bulk head :) While my mate was making up the loom, I started replacing the lower manifold and removing the alternator to replace pulley and the bolts... Beleive me when I say this cheeky smile didnt last for long... it was a bit of a nightmare creating the new loom.... :) so many plugs as the car the OBD2 golf the loom came off had air con... Replacing the lower manifold was easy enough once everything was off, cleaned everything up, replaced the rocker cover studs and installed some stainless nuts... The old stuff had seen better days... here we have the alternator all refitted... which was no easy task!! and took some gentle persuasian to get back on.... I also had my pulley vapour blasted and gave the alternator a good clean up using scotch pads... Ok, so we now have everything back together.... and ready to fire it up... it started, but then cuts out with a VAG-COM error; Saturday,12,November,2011,21:51:33:23162 VAG-COM Version: Release 704.1 The VR6 Owners Club Address 25: Immobilizer Control Module Part Number: 1H0 953 257 B Component and/or Version: IMMO VWZ3Z0S2042493 V00 Software Coding: 09600 Work Shop Code: WSC 00516 2 Faults Found: 01176 - Key 65-10 - Unauthorized - Intermittent 00546 - Data wiring faulty 27-00 - Implausible Signal so, not alot we could do, we decided the best plan would be to get it all back together and make sure aux pump, fans etc... all kicked in, we tested this by bridging the pins on the thermo housing plugs, refitted the radiator, re-wrapped some of the existing corrado loom to make things all neat and reinstall engine plastics... So, things that remain: - Finish wrapping looms, getting some screw on cable ties to reattach loom across the bulkhead and around the suspension turrets. - Imobiliser delete - re-fit fuse box / shelves - re-fit seat - re-attach bonnet cable - Cross fingers it starts... The only other major issues is now with my Clifford alarm playing silly buggers, my full enclosure no longer works off the button so will probably need a specialist to be involved to sort this. so if anyone is good with alarms, please let me know :) Also replaced a dodgy exhaust clamp and bled up brakes, clutch ABS etc... so thats pretty much it for this weekend.. My 32 engine was all corroded up and looked a right nasty mess but as you say, with some heavy duty scrubbing it all comes up a treat! With your OBDWan Kenobe conversion, were the key and coil reader from the donor car? That's odd you got an authorization error. With mine I just taped the key inside the reader and cable tied both up behind the dash somewhere! Oh well, Uncle Vince will do the biz and you won't need to worry about that anymore and the other good bit about that is the chip holder will be put in, so any future remaps will be quicker and easier. I wish I could take credit for that photo being me, but it's not ;-) Its my mate who came up to help with the conversion from VR6OC :) yeah it is slowly starting to look better than it was when I first got the car... looking back, its hard to beleive it was in the state it was! but with some more TLC, another corrado saved with a view of keeping it and doing it properly! LOL - OBDWan Kenobe conversion :) yeah was a little dispaointed that it didnt work, it all came off the same car... picked up all the OBD2 stuff, ceramic coated 6 branch manifold, vibra engine mounts / gearbox mount for 300 sheets a couple of years ago.... pretty sure its wired up correctly too. very strange... i'll have one more look tonight and refernce Daves info from his build thread, but pretty sure it's the same... ECU has just been picked up, so fingers crossed it comes back soon, Vince is a star for sorting it me, I do remember he hates doing the imob delete stuff as it bores him, getting limiter raised to 6700RPM too to match original ECU so all is good in the hood when it comes back, assuming it starts :) figured out why my alarm wasnt arming / disarming, it was due to a low battery in my fob, must have had something pressed on the button when its been in my draw... never mind :) but still got intermittent full closure issues... windows dont go up, nor do the doors lock etc.... god knows whats happened there! may have to get a pro in to get that as dont re-call removing any wires relating to the clifford alarm! good point about the chip holder.... will be taking it for mapping some point next year after ive got some 263's in :) schimmel of course... VR6Pete 0 Posted February 4, 2012 (edited) its been a while since my last update... but rest assured, I've kept working on the OBD2 stuff... Got my ECU back with a raised limiter too! (Thanks Vince @ Stealth) fitted it all in, and it fired first flick of the key! Here's a complimentary video :) First impressions.... so much smooother, almost worth all the pain of the conversion..... It wasn't without its problems though, and soon noticed the temp gauge wasn't working, and the aux water pump wasn't running and fans were not kicking in as they should... After looking at various wiring diagrams (thanks Dave and Vince @ Stealth) soon identified where the problem came from... we had forgot to connect the 2 wires to the aux pump, and there were a few issues in the fuse box which was the cause of the fans not running... We verified that all stages were working, only strange thing was that birding the 2 pins on the yellow sensor didn't kick in the fans in as it used to do... but as all 3 fan speeds were kicking in when they should, i was happy with this... The only problem was the temp gauge in the cluster was not reading! managed get hold of some golf GTI mk3 clocks as the temp gauge is on the same circuit as the corrado and quickly identified the fault was with my cluster, so I currently have a new temp gauge in the post with a view of replacing the respective gauge in my cluster... Happy days.... I also fitted a new drivers side hub as the one on the car was "mashed" and was difficult to get a wheel on that side of the car... such a simple job turned into an hour as the bolts for the brake disk shield sheered off my new hub.... some jiggery later we got it all hooked together and called it a night..... Next mission was to find a place to swap my tyres over onto my new speed lines :) easer said than done around these parts and without going to a national tyre place on a Sunday! so, after several cheese oatcakes managed to find somewhere to swap them over... was slightly worried as none of the guys actually spoke any english, but they had all the various snap on machines so took the risk! all swapped over, noticed the rear wheels didn't have any weights on them! LOL They tried to say you don't need to balance rear wheels.... I just told them to do it!!! muppets! fitted the new wheels to my Corrado! I think they look pretty good! fired it up again and the bloody ABS light was on arrrrggggh! turned out the ABS sensor in the new hub was chuffed! Tried to extract the old sensor from my knackered hub as it looked new, unfortunately it snapped.... ordered a new one.... just need to fit it now! Also had a sneaky peak at new VR6OC banners that came that weekend too! Tided up all the loose wires and re-routed my alarm cables, wrapped into my newly created loom for neatness... ran out of loom tape so just need to finish wrapping I got more from Audi... 2 rolls for 6 quids I t bought was reasonable... Ordered a few bits of the VW classic parts thread.... glovebox strip and rear VR6 badge :) soooo only jobs that remain: 1) find the wires to my glove box bulb holder! will need remove glove box for this! 2) fit ABS sensor 3) fit rear VR6 badge 4) Finish wrapping last bit of engine loom 5) Shotblast / respray my new slam panel 6) replace temp gauge in cluster 7) buy petrol and MOT! Happy days.... so glad its nearly there.... already got plans for phase 2.... more power and bodywork! Thoughts / comments welcome ! Only taken nearly 3 years to get her road worthy again with some tweaks along the way, but to be fair it was in a real state when I got it and knew exactly what I was up against!! I did take a month off over Christmas though and was a good time read up on my issues! Cannot wait get last few bits sorted and hopefully soon I'll be listening to the sweet note of a vr6 under my right foot once again :) Paint code is L041, I did have it detailed last year but is covered in dust and crap again.. I've just secured a new gearbox and currently looking for a new 3.68 FD to fit! Typical eh? Also managed to locate and route the wire to my glove compartment lamp as it was lost in action with the dash being out etc... Also fitted my glovebox strip too... VR6Pete 0 Posted May 21, 2012 (edited) It's been a while since I last did an update.... Had a few issues prior to MOT with the aux pump blowing and needing a new seal on the radiator neck.... MOT didnt quite go to plan.... it failed on the following: 2x front to rear brake lines 1x passener side brake line 1x drop link Advisories: Drivers side headlight pattern (upon inspection noticed that the unit was from a left hooker!) Play on passenger wishbone brake discs badly pitted - but still passed brake tolerance..... not surprised they had been standing for 3 years plus! So, I've now purchased 3 green steel brake lines from a chap on here, a new front sub-frame as the captive nut had snapped, this is currently away at the powder coaters getting blasted and restored... I had a spare glass from my old knackered headlights, so replaced the glass from a RHD corrado and also replaced the reflector too... out wit the old: [ATTACH=CONFIG]63449[/ATTACH] in with the new: [ATTACH=CONFIG]63421[/ATTACH] Stuck some Phillips X-Vision bulbs, really noticable improvement now... Finished wrapping all the OBD2 loom now, and have also fitted a battery jacket to finish off the engine bay; [ATTACH=CONFIG]63425[/ATTACH] Replaced my old fuel tank straps with my stainless ones... [ATTACH=CONFIG]63429[/ATTACH] [ATTACH=CONFIG]63433[/ATTACH] [ATTACH=CONFIG]63437[/ATTACH] fitted my new roof rubbers too, pretty happy with these... [ATTACH=CONFIG]63441[/ATTACH] now for some more exiting stuff... Dropped my G60 gearbox and VR6 gearbox down at Stealth Racing for a 3.68 transplant.... bought all new seals and bearings as well as ARP diff bolts... honestly cannot wait for this :) [ATTACH=CONFIG]63445[/ATTACH] Also ordered a set of 263 schimmel cams as part of the group buy on here too.... should be fun to drive :) my current to do list looks a little like this: fit brake lines fit new sub-frame & wishbones fit ARB drop links replace 2 exhaust rubbers - mid section fix the fuel tank pressurising issue... looks like I have a blocked pipe from the tank to evap canaster. replace oil cooler as was running hotter than id have liked.. Then its ready for re-MOT :) now I have my final to-do list to get it on the road, its getting pretty exciting.
