MuckinFunkee 0 Posted September 22, 2009 Hi, not quite sure where to go with this but I am nuff depressed ... Thursday - took G60 from Derby to Rotherham & back - ran sweet, never missed a beat Friday - just went to work and back, about 6 mile round trip - no probs Saturday - went shopping, complaining to husband that car has a strange knock coming from supercharger side of engine and wont accelerate properly and feels what can only be described as "like its holding back" Sunday - supposed to be meeting people and going for a drive, got about 300 yds before the car decided it didnt want to go above 20 mph and threatened to cut out everytime you dip the clutch or try and accelerate Monday - towed the car from Derby to Nottingham to be looked at by the Garage (if that appears on "spotted i'll die of shame ) Tuesday - Garage rings, now this is the garage I have used forever and trust implicitly, quote "Hi Helen, dont know if this is good news or bad news but I cant find whats wrong with your car, now it will just tick over for a couple of mins before dying, im having it recovery trucked to another garage who specialise in dubs (again if this appears on "spotted" im gonna die) and having them have a look and put it on their diagnostics machine" Wednesday - Who knows, I darent answer the phone tomorrow !       Anyone had this or similar before, or can share any ideas at all, Thanks, a very very very sad Helen x
DanVW 0 Posted September 22, 2009 Sounds exactly like the symptoms mine showed when the crank bolt worked loose get them to check the timing make sure all the marks line up, not too bad a job you should just need a new crank pully a DX bolt and washer (as long as the loose pully has not dammaged the end of the crank)
Jon_vr6 1 Posted September 22, 2009 Sad news Helen it will get sorted as long as the garage knows their cars. Kates old 16valver(Devils Car) was always in the garage and had a multitude of problems, remember her saying about a time when the car wouldnt idle or summet, she said she took it to a few garages and it came back the same so things could be worse Helen! Sucks waiting round for the dreaded phonecall though! Hope its good news Jon

DanVW 0 Posted September 23, 2009 Yep exactly how mine was but it went from running fine to loosing power and stalling in about 500 meters and after that it wouldnt start at all because the timing was so far out, it was the first time I had ever attempted anything more complcated than changing the oil and filter on my car so it's really not that hard to sort  Any garage worth their salt should be able to check the timing marks line up or not and once identifed the will need to remove the Crank pully and replace with a new one and a MK1 dx Bolt and Washer (have a search on here for more info on this) Best of luck :-) Dan

MuckinFunkee 0 Posted September 24, 2009 Dan vw you are awesome !! :notworthy:  The good news is you were spot on with your diagnosis, so a big piece of chocolate cake for you the bad news is the guy at the garage said the the crankshaft is really worn so needs a new one, the really bad news is just phoned the stealers and they are £352 .... :pale: :pale: :pale: :pale: garage guy says you can get a new pulley and use metal repair paste, but theres no guarantees this will hold, and he said its not the best idea anyone any input, or got a crankshaft lying around ? Supercharged 2 Posted September 24, 2009 Hello - Glad you found the problem fairly quickly - the pulley is cheap but as you say the crank itself is not... You can however re-face them if it's not too bad - there is a special tool for this and I know Steve at C&R has one so that could be an option.

Yea when the Garage guys says it needs a new one how bad is it? Mine was slightly chewed but i fitted a new Crank pully and DX Bolt and its been fine ever since, well worth taking it down to Steve though I have never met him, I have a stack of C+R receipts from the PO of my car and he has a top reputation on here. Best of luck and keep us informed Cheers Dan

swiftkid 1 Posted September 25, 2009 Just an idea for you, you could just look for somebody selling a g60 engine? bet you could pick one up and get it put in for alot cheaper than a rebuild.
MuckinFunkee 0 Posted September 25, 2009 Just an idea for you, you could just look for somebody selling a g60 engine? bet you could pick one up and get it put in for alot cheaper than a rebuild. I was wondering this too, then thought what if I do that then the same thing happens again ..... I was thinking maybe if I get this one done at least I know its good for a while, not sure what to do tbh
swiftkid 1 Posted September 25, 2009 good point, i had the very same choice... had a vr6 in bits and the choice of buying another vr6 engine. in the end i rebuilt the vr6, cost me alot of money but did it myself so saved ALOT on labour but runs like an absolute dream now *touch wood* and i know its been done right with no shortcuts. BUT you could look carefully and find a well looked after g60 engine with full documentation and get it checked over before you stick it in. rebuilding an engine is very time consuming and labour intensive so it will cost alot. But end of the day its upto you.

Its not a nice feeling, H Is this some local garage or C+R? I would try and get it to someone who has dealt with this kind of problem before.. (I know easier said than done when your pride and joy is off the road :( ) but the G60 is a special beast and needs to be looked at by someone with a bit of experience on them, anyway have a look at my thread from when this happened to me you can see the crank damage in the pics I posted and all I did was file the end of the crank flat (no special tool just a metal file) and fitted the new pully and like I said its been fine ever since :) viewtopic.php?f=1&t=47645&p=561386#p561386 Cheers Dan
MuckinFunkee 0 Posted September 25, 2009 Hi Dan, (and everyone else) thanks for your input, I have just been to the garage to see it, its a right mess, the keyway is non existent, I looked at your before pics and went "cor I wish mine looked like that" lmao! the timing was 3 teeth out !! At least now ive seen it with my own eyes I can apreciate how bad it is, wish I had taken a pic of it to show you, but I just stood there open mouthed, was looking at the cam belt while I was there, thats in a right mess too, doesn't look like its ever been done! its nearly as smooth on the inside as the outside, the water pump looks like its gonna fall apart if you sneezed on it, so perhaps this is a blessing in disguise, at least it is fixable its still at my garage, the guy has pimped the crank work out to an associate of his who does specialise in dubs used to work for vw and owns 2 g60's and a golf rallye, so quite confident about him I was thinking about it on the way there and have decided to stick with this engine, get it fixed at least then I have piece of mind that its as sound as can be, Dont plan on having another car for ages so its worth it in the long run, gave him a grand while I was there (that hurt lol!! :pale: ) and said ill bring the other £500 when I pick it up, which should be about 2 weeks, you know if I get it back and the supercharger or summat goes im gonna push it off a cliff !! Anyway im off for a bloody big glass of Jack daniels ... make that a bottle (I have no car for 2 weeks might as well take advantage lol  ) Thanks again H x
wippy 0 Posted September 25, 2009 Jesus Christ !!!!! a new crank what the hell has happened to the world , i cannot believe that nobody can repair anything anymore they just throw the old away and replace it, i understand that not everyone is able to repair things but so called garages???? if it happened to mine it would be a few zapps with the welder out with the file and back on the road in a few hours, it really angers me , where the hell have all the skilled people gone????? Rant over :D

wippy 0 Posted September 25, 2009 Yikes !! didnt mean to upset you, the entire end of the crank is shredded, I will ask him to save it and will post a pic of it lol not upset i just get a lot of people coming to me to get stuff fixed after garages have quoted silly amounts of money to replace them, by what you have said yours is proper mangled but still these things can be repaired although if you have to pay someone to do it a new one would probably be more cost effective, i have a new crank bolt sitting in front of me right now waiting for me to get time to fit it, perhaps i will find time tomorrow after reading this :D
MuckinFunkee 0 Posted September 27, 2009 I CANT TAKE ANYMORE !!! :mad2: :censored: :bad-words:  So after everything going on with my car this week Last night some chavtastic little :censored: !!! Decided it was a nice night to go round the whole estate, breaking into EVERYONES (almost everyones) car including Lees G60 on the drive, wierdly they took the stereo front out of the drivers door pocket (you really dont need to tell me this is a bad place to keep it) they removed the usb stick from it and left them both on the back seat ???? Took the first aid box out of the back seat and left it on the front passenger seat ???? left all the tools in the boot ???? took the money out of the ashtray (about £15) and took the ashtray?????? which also had the tools for removing the stereo in it and the locking wheel nut key, but left the stereo ???? rifled through the glove box and found ..... my tom tom :( again, I know stupid place to leave it, the good news is its about knackered anyway, it wont hold a charge and struggles to keep a signal, so tonight I'm gonna wait up to see if the little :censored: is brave enough to come back for the wheels !! I have changed the locking nuts so the key is worthless to anyone, and I had a wander down the street earlier found 2 smashed up stereos and Lees ashtray which was thankfully ok and is back in the car. The really really wierd thing is they made no damage getting in, the drivers door was still locked and just the passenger door had been opened  Oh and both of our staffies have been sacked for not telling me that some arse was rooting through the car !! .... Thank god this week is nearly over and I can start a fresh tomorrow, H
swiftkid 1 Posted September 28, 2009 thats awful! i really feel for you. one thing i would check is underneath the door handle itself, i had my old car broken into and couldnt find out how they had done it until i was washing my car a while later and found a huge hole underneath the handle where they had stuck a screwdriver in.
