black exaust - running rich?

hi guys, jsut a quickie rly - i have what looks like soot in the exaust (all black around the rim) havent noticed any smoke though, could this be running rich do you think?

i had this when my coil pack gave up the ghost so i think it is a by product of rich running as it also killed the cat converter too! :(

are there any outher symptoms of a dodgey coil pack? atm im looking at lambda - coilpacks - n75v - maf and not shure which lol

it will be running a little rich. its not a problem

Yes perfectly normal, it's the midrange fuelling. Check the spark plugs, if they're light grey in colour then all is well :salute:

 

Our old cars can't maintain 14.7 AFR everywhere in the rev range like modern ones can, but check out any MK5 R32's tailpipes, they're black aswell :D

ok checked the spark plugs looked ok, have an orange tinge to them.
