Potential takeover of Karmann by VW!

Recommended Posts

Just seen it on the Beeb - Great News.

Much rather they make Boxters than CLK's!

Is it just me or does anyone not think that the Karmann C Class design looks like it could very probably have been for the Mk2 Corrado? Just looks very Corrado like and the spoiler looks like it should go up and down. Just missing some slightly fatter arches.

Do you mean Mercedes C coupe?

Agree there is much similarity though the Merc is heavy & soggy compared with the C.

Yeah thats the one. Always could have been made into a sportier VW I am sure! Would have been spot on with a nice big V6 8)

The old C Class coupe (not CLK) - the forerunner of the CLC was available with a 3.5 litre V6, thats been dropped now, biggest petrol engine is the 1.8 litre 200 Kompressor with just over 180bhp. Its not a nice car, despite being touted as a new car its anything but, just a facelifted C Class coupe with a nose and tail revamp and still based on the last generation C Class.

Mk1 replaces Mk2 which in turn replaces Mk3 etc,

If the Rado is a Mk3 Rocco why were they sold alongside each other FOR 4 YEARS?

Golf, Jetta, Bora, Scirocco, passat are all winds or wind related. There is a theme developing.....

Indeed.... VW went a touch wind crazy for a few years in the same way that Ford went porn mag crazy with Fiesta and Escort....

As I said, the Corrado was always going to be the MK3 Scirocco.. but then the development costs soared, it ran behind schedule, etc etc - and the outcome was that whatever came out of the development process would have to be significantly differentiated from the MK2 Scirocco somehow - so it came online as a whole new model. Stands to reason that VW would have maintained two lines - the Scirocco as the lower priced, more affordable Coupe and the Corrado as the more 'premium' version.

As a matter of fact the then VW CEO, Dr Carl Hahn was married to an Italian lady called Corrado, that´s how the Corrado got its name. Even Karmann were surprised by this decision, so there you go, anorakism straight from an interview with Schwebe in a recent German VW mag.

So, Eric what is the latest Scirroco then ? The Mk IV Rocco ??

Simple: A NaR, or ¨Not a Rocco¨.

Nice, if it happens we could drill a couple of holes in the back of your US-Spec G60 Eric so you can wear a VW badge

Burn him on the stake in his own TDI oil, the witch

The local press (Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung) today have a very interesting twist on this topic:

The liquidator is alleged to have infiltrated a Mr ¨Meyer¨ into Karmann, whose sole role was to spy out what the employees say about each other, find the leak to the 3 owner families (as the 3 owner families knowing the liquidator´s every move apparently annoyed the liquidator), get employees to tell stuff by promising them that they would keep their jobs etc.

2 solicitors in Osnabrück who have started to investigate this matter have now also found handwritten evidence from the liquidator that the whole idea was to make Karmann as cheap and attractive as possible for a take-over by VW; by sacking pretty much as many staff as possible and keeping the 3 owner families in the dark.

In the secret notes found, there is talk about Christian Wullf (called Papa), ex-CEO of Karmann Harbig (called 007), his assistant (yup, Moneypenny), and most of all VW (called ... KdF  I hope you all know the significance of that term).

The 2 solicitors are investigating the legal implications: Potentially a large proportion of the sacked staff would have to be taken on by VW due to several reasons, one of which is gross misrepresentation by Karmann management of their situation (not mentioning the take-over plans by VW).

The plot thickens 8)

Latest news:

VW have increased their offer from 20 million to 35 million Euros. The 3 owner families want 50 million. None of the 2 parties wanted to comment at this stage. (NOZ 31/20/2009)

I shudder to think what price a modern Corrado R would be with all the toys!

Nooo..... we don't drive 'Correrdo's do we you plumbs!

The Corrado (which was originally to be named Taifun (Typhoon) except it was already a registered trademark for a GM truck) was derived from the spanish verb Corra which means to run fast or sprint.

No such verb in Spanish. The verb correr does indeed mean to run but when conjugated in the context of the perfect tense participle "he corrido" it means "I have run".

It's official now:

VW is taking over parts of Karmann. Machines, plots of land and installations are to be acquired. A new VW subsidiary will be created in the next few weeks for a new car project.

Just been on German telly: The name Karmann will most likely be killed off.

So take care of your precious Karmanns, they will become a rarity, that future generations may not even remember unless we make them through our toys :-)

Cabrios will be built at the Osnabrück plant.

Voices have been heard saying that VW deliberately let Karmann bleed to death so they can buy ´m for peanuts. Shame about all the jobs etc.
