Oil light issues.......UPDATE, pg2

Recommended Posts

When my oil temp hits around 122-124 my oil warning light goes off, but its intermittent, sometimes it'll go off for 10 secs, other times it will remain on, then if i turn the engine off and back on again its fine.

Im guessing its a sensor issue. Any ideas?

That's pretty warm for oil, but not sure it's related. I'd not mess around at all and get a pressure gauge rigged up and check it's all ok. Wouldn't take much to knacker the engine?

I agree with Toad - Oil thins as it gets hot, you could be loosing pressure. Your oil temps seem too warm for my taste as well. I haven't seen the temp on my VR much over 110.

They are high temps to be fair, highest ive seen was 130 and then the heater matrix spat its dummy out.

So definatly something to investigate further in my opinion.

It generally gets that hot when driving through town, stop/start/traffic jams, its usually around 110 when driving normally.

Unfortunately i cant really afford to get it into a garage until after crimbo so i guess i'll just have to avoid this kind of driving, it does sound quite rattly when i start it up.

As for damaging the engine, i had it rebuilt around 12k ago, so if it goes again i think i'll be throwing in the towel with C's

If it's rattly on start up, and it's only got 12k old tappets in, then I think it needs looking at ASAP, and avoiding driving. The oil level is correct I assume?

Coolant temps are pretty normal, around 100-110, but then the fan kicks in.

Looks like I need to get my engine man to take a look, just what I need before crimbo. If it turns out to be something big or expensive I think that might do it for me, I've been slowly losing patience with it and something else big will push me over the edge

I wouln't call that normal tbh my friend.

So at what temp is the fan first kicking in ?

Fan kicks in at 100.

Again that's from stop/start town driving, it's not running at that temp when I'm cruising down dual carriageways, on a run it's very well behaved, coolant around 80, oil around 100

Temps of over 110 are common on the valvers, as they can run quite hot. Although if its hitting 124 that’s pretty high (and not good for the oil or engine components), which may be causing the oil to thin and causing pressure probs, hence the buzzer.

I have no experience of the 1.8 16v engine, but my ABF-engined Passat NEVER gets its oil that hot. The hottest it has ever been, after climbing the Gotthard pass in mid summer, 5 up and full of luggage, was 106. Normally its 92-96.

Maybe your water/oil heat exchanger is misbehaving. Rattling is ominous, so I too would suspect the oil pump.

Best wishes

well maybe i'm out of my depth here as i'm a g60 owner but your fan should come on b4 100 imo.

I'll double check my manual when I get homealthough again the manual isn't for a valver.

Question, if i were to simply replace the oil pump what is the likelihood of this solving the issue? Its just that if i can avoid having to mess around with a garage then i will, as i could replace the pump myself in a few hours, and its due for an oil and filter swap anyway.

I understand that the water temps are high, and im going to be looking at the switch on the rad to try and solve this too.

I was going to have a go myself, but ive come to the conclusion that theres far too many variables in the coolant and oil system, so its booked in at a VW specialist on Thursday, fingers crossed it'll be something simple
