Lambda Question

Recommended Posts

I'm replacing the CAT with a Supersprint By-pass pipe this weekend and plan to replace the lambda as a matter of cause. Anyone know if a 92' VR uses a 2 or 3 wiring probe? Been quoted about £30 for one from GS&F but they need to know the number of wires.

TIA

Not sure about 92 VRs but my 94 sports a 4 wire one. Depends if yours is a preheated one or not. Just look on the top of the rear engine mount at the black plug and count the wires.

If you get a GSF one, make sure it has the proper plug on it to make life easier for yourself. IIRC they are universal and not terminated with a VAG end.

I got mine from the dealer, think it was about £50.

Can the lambda be replaced without having to remove the CAT? Phoned GSF and VW today the genuine part with 4 wirings is £80 and money's tight this month. Wondering if i can fit the bypass with the old lambda and then replace the lambda the folowing month without having to remove the bypass pipe?

TIA

Yep it can, it's a bit fiddly though. Yeah you can use the existing lambda in the bypass pipe and fit a new lambda at a later date. What's wrong with your current lambda? They either work or they don't, they don't wear out as such. Chances are yours is OK, otherwise the engine would behave erratically.

Current lambda is fine, thought if its a nasty job to change it now would be the time to do it. But if as you say its unlike to be worn i may as well replace it when/if it fails.

cheers

Just mention to the place that's fitting your by-pass that you can get lambdas trade price from VAG and that they're not to buy one if they break it, but they're to call you immediately instead.... It's amazing how suddenly they don't break the probe 'cos they won't make their mark up on it!

If you're doing it yourself, be careful with the wiring out of the probe, and don't try and force it to turn... Soak the thread in WD40 for a bit if it's really tight, and you should be fine with it... 8)
