You can't disable it - unles you "disable" the ABS...

 

disconnect one of the ABS sensors (front strut tops under the bonnet) ==> no ABS ==> No Traction Control :-)

 

But its effect is so subtle (i.e. crap) that you can't notice it, even when it's working.... :? :? :roll: :roll:

Well, you can notice the noise and the vibration, but you're right, you can't really notice the effect of the system. It's still dead easy to light up the inside wheel... (Or both - at which point it won't do anything anyway..)

That's just it - I've never noticed the TC trying to do anything at all - no noise, no vibration - which led me to ask all those months ago http://the-corrado.net/.archive/forum/viewtopic. ... order=asc&

 

I think the "it doesn't work over half throttle" bit is a myth too - as far as I can tell (Bentley/ETKA etc.) there's absolutely no link between the ABS and the ECU so how does the ABS know if you've applied "over half throttle"??? :roll: :? :?:

Of course, it should work on any throttle opening, mine certainly does.

I think maybe Andi meant something like "it's not effective on anything more than 50% throttle", but AFAIK it's not disabled.

The VR doesn't have enough low down grunt to justify TC anyway! And also, VR brakes are not the sharpest tools in the box either, so gentle prodding from the ABS controller is going to do diddly squat!

Just get a decent diff and forget about the TC. I certainly won't be fitting it when I fit my VR lump (the ickle 8v doesn't come with it)

Quite agree Kev, my 2.0 Cavalier had more torque at 1200 revs than the VR6 does, and was trickier to get off the line without wheelspin as a result.. (Of course it also had a shockingly awful chassis and really really poor front-end grip.. But this just made matters worse.)

That's what makes the VR6 such a practical supercar tho. You can trundle around and it won't spill the milk when you don't want it to...

Look, on the 8V Cavalier you get NO benefit from reving past 3k rpm. It's producing peak torque at 2600, and you go above 3000 it just gets loud, not fast. Therefore when you aren't racing Kevin and Wayne in their Escorts you let the big torquey engine do it's work. Why waste petrol, annoy the neighbours, and wear your engine by revving it higher than it needs to?

Interestingly enough, it is when you hold a VR at 1200rpm that the dreaded chain slap is at it's loudest.....

Seriously? I didn't know your chain tensioners had bitten the dust? If you go to the '12V VR6 forum' at VWVortex.com, there is a soundclip in one of the threads of a 144K old VR with dreaded noise! It's REALLY bad!

 

Why not go over to Orange county and become a Fruit Farmer?

I fully expect they have.. No reason to assume not, given that every other person says theirs have at 100k miles, and I can definitely hear a metallic ticking noise from that end of the engine. It's not really loud, and it's not horrible, but I'm sure it'll need doing at some point.

I can't find that sound clip, so I can't really compare to mine...

Bear in mind that clip was recorded with a DV cam perched just on top of the gearbox - right next to the chains themselves... It'll accentuate the problem, no question. I'll try and play the clip at home, and see if I get depressed again... :(

It's no different to pressing a screwdriver to the casing and putting your ear on the end of it, assuming the camera wasn't mounted on rubber feet of course.

 

The chains should be quiet regardless......these aren't, as you will hear for yourself!

Mine aren't silent, that's true enough. A noticeable tick-tick-tick from that side of the engine when it's revved gently.

And having heard the .wma clip mine aren't *that* bad, no question... :)

I get the tick-tick noise that you can hear in the clip, but not the rattle.

The ticking is tappets.....mine are new and they still tick.....the injectors tick also.

 

If you do the 'mock stethoscope' screwdriver trick just below the large bolt at the back of the head (upper tensioner), you will hear a constant whirring noise. This is normal. That slapping noise on the sound clip is the result of a completely fecked (i.e. non existent) plastic rubbing strip on the upper tensioner! Yours is no where near that bad.....you'd know if it was :lol:

i've got a slight noise coming from that area. I caan only assume that it's the timing chain anyway. Not too loud, but then i should flipping hope not, ive only got 66k on the thing!!
