Help - 24v not starting!

Hi all,

 

Having a bit of a problem with my rado just now (24v conversion). She cut out in traffic the other day and wouldn't start again (and still won't). I did noticed the oil temp going up and wondered why the fans weren't coming on. Just as I was thinking that she cut out and wouldn't start again.

 

Anyway, ended up getting the AA out who had no joy and they put it down to an ecu fault as they couldn't read anything from it. The car turns over but there is no spark going to the plugs.

 

It's now in at my usual VW garage and they also think it might be the ecu as they can't read it either (never had any issues with it before).

 

Just looking for any ideas really?? Any questions just ask as I may not have described it very well!

 

PS How much is an ecu these days?

Have you phoned PSI Tuning where the work was done, Andy should be able to give you some pointers??

Not being able to read the ecu could also be a power problem,does your obd2 port have 12v and earth working correctly? is there spark,fuel or injectors working? these could be all linked to power failure,most ecu's that go faulty give random fault codes,hardly any that i have done just dont not read at all.....

Do the 24v's still use an ECU relay? If so, I'd be having a look there first, although that wouldn't explain it getting hot.

If I do have to pay £££ then I'll probably just keep her......which I guess isn't that bad! Maybe it's a sign :wink:

Right, my local VW specialists have confirmed that the ECU has gone, bummer!! So now I have a dilemma given the fact I had her up for sale - do I get her fixed (anyone have an idea of costs for a new 24v ECU?) or do I try and sell her as is, for someone else to fix? I was originally after £4k but I don't know how much it's likely to cost to fix so not sure what a reasonable reduced price would be or if anyone would actually be interested?

 

Any advice/opinions appreciated. I've been in touch with PSI and just waiting to hear back. Ideally I'd like to take the car down there but not sure of towing costs from Edinburgh to Stoke.

 

It's making me so sad having a broken Corrado :-(

Why would you need to go back to them? Is it not just a case of getting a new ECU and getting the keys coded etc?

I dunno, just thought that PSI would be the best folk to sort it out. You any ideas how much a 24v ecu costs? It's not that big a deal getting it down there if I can do it through my AA cover.

Yeah I'd get another ME7 ecu from somewhere and just swap them over. You say you've got a custom code running on it so they should install it on the new ecu for you for free? (i'm fairly sure Revo do)

 

edit - ecu can't be more than £200 secondhand surely?

 

Only thing I would ask is what made the ecu go pop? Best of luck mate, I'm loving my 24v at the moment so much so I'm amazed so many end up selling them!

Cheers for that. Will wander up to the garage just now and see what they say re sourcing an ECU. The reason for it going pop is what is concerning me most!! I reckon if I'm forking out to get it fixed I'd rather just keep her but we'll see. Not sure if I'd get any interest in a car needing an ECU :-(

Well I've finally got the rado sorted! I ended up taking it to PSI in the end as my garage up here couldn't even source a replacement ecu and I'm so glad I did. It turns out that the rad switch had gone which caused the overheating in the first place and the overheating blew an ecu relay. PSI found the problem straight away and was such an easy (and cheap) fix. Think Andy enjoyed seeing her again! Was a bit of hassle getting it down there but I really enjoyed driving her back up. Forgot how good a car it is :D

 

Anyway, I did have her for sale before I had the problems and I reckon I'll advertise her again, maybe!

I can't believe your local place thought it was the ECU without trying the relay first - if they are meant to be a VW specialist I wouldn't use them again, idiots!
