when i've done mine in the past i was told to run the engine from cold without the coolant cap on the header tank, and also put heaters on inside the car, then watch the header tank and replace the cap as it starts to boil over

As long as you fill up from the top radiator hose you shouldn't have a problem with air locks

Yeh I ended up trying that and it seems to of worked. heaters are hottish and fans kickin in now. job done I think going to give it another once over tomorrow before I carry on as usual, just to be sure.

is it possible that the water pump is failing? i.e not clearing the airlocks like it would do?

pressure is what clears airlocks, garden hose in one end and an open connection at the other end ,blast mains water through it,thats what we did on gravity heating systems that got airlocked,im guessing it would be ok to use this method

on a cars system?
