Better mpg on normal unleaded compared to super?

I have run my G60 on super unleaded (usually Tescos 99 or V-power) for the last 2 years, pretty much since the mods took it over 200bhp. I have never had better than 31mpg out of it according to the MFA in that time, and that was with plenty of coasting down hills and general boring driving! Usual spirited A road driving gives 23-25mpg

 

I couldn't get any super last night and filled up with standard Tesco unleaded as I had to drive from Bewdley to Brecon. Admittedly I did get stuck behind slow cars a lot of the way so spent it doing about 50mph in 5th, but my MFA showed 35mpg! On the way back this afternoon I gave it some welly for extended periods and spend the rest of the time at 60-70, and it still showed 33mpg over the journey!

 

I guess the only way to really test it is with the fill up and measure method as I guess the MFA may be misreading? Just wondered if anyone else has had anything similar happen. Are the statements about super giving more miles per tank a load of balls?!

My G60 MFA always used to say the same and I've no idea if it was truth or lies - I never measured it. As you say, best thing to do is manual calculation - be interested to hear what you find though! :)

The MFA is a rough estimation at best. Here's how I calculate my mileage:

 

Brim the tank,

Drive for however far you like, the further the better as the average mpg will be more accurate,

refill the car to brimming,

note down the speedo trip counter for the mileage you have done between fill ups,

using the petrol receipt work out the miles per gallon. I use 4.5454545454... for litres per gallon, then divide total mileage by that gallon figure.

I too am a fuel consumption anorak. There I said it.

 

Similar method to boost monkey, but I use the odometer reading rather than trip. I plug it all into a spreadsheet. It give me graphs and everything. I also note the MPG from the MPG2 setting on the MFA, and reset that when I fill up - after writing down the number. I've been amazed how close the MFA MPG2 and the calculation are - within 0.5mpg a lot of the time. On my Touran, the MFA is between 5 and 10MPG optimistic.

I'm convinced i got slightly better mpg with Esso super unleaded last week. I based this solely on the MFA but surely if the MFA is incorrect it is still consistent?

My G60 gets better MPG during summer with V-power or BP Ultimate 102 only when its very hot.during the colder weather i run it on normal 95 because i swear that higher octane fuel cools engine more.

 

Im sure G60s are supposed to run hot anyway and they dont really advance the timing as much as newer engined cars so you wont really get full use of higher octane fuel.

Unless your G60 is mapped to run higher octane and more igintion advance then you wont really see a benefit

My fuel economy has jumped 4mpg from 32 to 36 on average since I got the cambelt done. Shows how important it is that your engine is timed well, and as mentioned above shows that sometimes you won't be using the extra octane unless it's been modded too....God knows how far out my timing was with the old belt!

I've noticed this... It takes ages to fill your tank campared to say a few years ago... do you think that it's limmitted to Litres per pence? so you can keep and eye on the value your putting in it?

yes they are recommended to run on it.

 

mine still has the original label on the inside of the fuel filler... recommends 98 ron but will run on 95

Is the G60 designed to run on 98ron+ then?

 

Depends on the ECU,different countries ran different maps to counter lower octane fuel.But thats if its a standard map which 99% of g60s arent.

 

91 is the minimum (no longer sold in europe now)

95 is reduced power

98 gives you full power.

anything over 98 is pretty much wasted. pay for higher octane fuel and still run like its on 98.unless of course your car has been mapped to run the higher octane

 

small expections are stuff like E10 we have over here which basicly 10% alcohol,90% petrol.Ive tested every type of petrol over here to see how it run in all types of weather

My G60 loves E10 stuff,runs like its on 98 but you have to be careful as the high alcohol content can eat through older rubber hoses!

My 8v golf has a label in the fuel filler saying 97/98 RON only, but also a sticker on the slam panel under the bonnet saying that the ignition timing has been altered so that it can run on 95RON! :lol:

Anyway...I'm getting an average of 29.7mpg, £0.20/mile after 4423 miles since January

the only problem is people seem to think the higher the octane number the better the fuel from cheaper outlets.far from the truth.octane only denotes the knock resistance. The fuel is still the same crap tescos or sainsbury's have on sale just with extra additives like ethanol(alco).basiclly it artifically raises the octane number but same amount of sulphur and other crap in cheaper fuels.So your fuel mileage maybe better with normal stuff because it dosent contain lower calorific value additives

 

Stuff like V-power is refined at the higher octane level rather than artifically raising it.Removing most of the crap and sulphur takes longer to refine hence the reason why its more expensive.Really,You get what you pay for.

 

only problem is that higher octane fuels work really well for modern cars.Lets face it the injection systems in these cars are well old and managment systems that are very basic.Yes they work well when in parameters,but they are limited and crude type of injection.

Let’s just say it was an emergency and I was 3 miles away from the nearest Shell station. :D
