how the hell does this come out?? been trying to remove mine to sind to Dave for a short shifter.

Karl, send me your email address and I'll forward the install guide for the shifter, it will explain.

I believe VW fitted the shifter first then the engine, exhaust, front subframe and rear beam,

so... just reverse those steps, or alternatively follow Dave's instructions :)
