lurchy steering

Recommended Posts

whenever i start a journey the steering on my C seems a little lurchy! this only happens at slow speeds but all of a sudden for a split second it will want to veer left or right, and sometimes the steering will feel very light for a second or to. is it safe to drive and does anyone know whats wrong!

thanks for any help

I had this issue about 6 months ago.

The bolts holding the ball joint into the wishbone had worked loose.

I would also check the condition of the ball joints and wishbone bushes as if they're worn it could have the same effect

from what i can see here http://the-corrado.net/archive/index.php?t-21998.html it looks like a pretty cheap and easy DIY fix (famous last words!)

so 3 Q's:

- will i need any special tools - about from splitter?

- how long can i drive for before this becomes serious?

- could it be anything else?

thanks for being so helpful mate

Check the condition of the aux drivebelt, tensioner and the pulleys, if the belt is slipping you'll get erratic steering. Slip the belt off and check all the bearings and security of the pulleys etc

It sounds serious now

All the jobs are pretty straight forward.

Couple of hours to change a wishbone being the longest. If bolts aren't seized.

I would get it looked at to be sure the correct part gets changed.

Are you running wide wheels? This can cause the same.

Or a loose power steering belt.

Many things to consider

do you guys know the approx. cost of getting this checked by an independant garage - doubt i could afford VW! or is that a case of how long is a piece of string.

Put your locacion in the side bar via your profile, then people can advise you where to take the car for any work needed, word of mouth beats yellow pages anyday

If you're near Littlehampton then JMR (forum user 16vG60) is well regarded on here. Worth going there just to look at his car.
