Fibreglass Wings and Boots

Not 100% sure about carbon but what is the point in getting carbon and painting it.;)

Carbon is really stable, why do they build 90% of F1 cars out of the stuff, I should know as I work for an F1 team. I would be more interested in Carbon/Kevlar wings, as they are more flexible and have a greater impact resistance. The only thing is the cost really with carbon, and those of you that would want them in carbon, wouldn't paint them I'm sure, unlike me who would if they where carbon/kevlar.

im asking if they can do carbon, kelvar.

Poor paint adhesion is based on the material or the releasing agent the suppliers use? Don't want to go through the hassle of doing all this only to find its a no go from the start.

I may not be too affected as my car isnt a daily, but Im interested in a group discussion on this issue.

Its all about the prep work with painting carbon, as long as you prep properly, filler primer, then paint, you will have a better than metal finish.

I'm up for wings, tailgate & bonnet in carbon/kevlar in preference to fibreglass and would definitely want it painted.

I'm pretty sure I've seen different colour ways in carbon fibre stuff in addition to the usual but I'm damned if I can remember where. IIRC there was a blue/black and a green/black as well as yellow/black. Have I got that right or have I imagined it?

EDIT Pure carbon is black; carbon/kevlar is black/yellow and other colour ways are possible by mixing carbon with various suitable materials.

Didn't Andrew at LWS say they'd get into other panels besides bonnets and roofs but would need firm committment from a minimum number of us to justify making the moulds first?

Well my friend, further to your interest in carbon tailgate. I had a group buy thing on here along with Sam a while back and in the light of LWS Design comming to the fore, I have had a prospective conversation with Andrew and we are looking to get this panel generated in the near future I hope. We have a donor tailgate to offer LWS Design and as soon as they can fit this into their busy work schedule then a mould can be created. While we are awaiting this attention, I need to hear from any seriously interested owners who would like to buy a carbon tailgate.

And doors?

Would be cool to be able to get bonnet, wings, doors & tailgate (and poss roof... tho' not for me) all in one deal and perhaps a package like this might attract more discount?

I'm already a defo maybe for a bonnet (subject to an agreement on a damage claim I'm trying to resolve) and would be very interested in a tailgate, wings and some doors but as ever it all depends on price.

Hi John, hows it going? glad to see your still on here, been a while since Ive spent a bit of time on the forum.

As you remember the boot/tailgate group buy fell short when we needed people to commit and ended up not going anywhere. The then running firm "Performance trim" were all ready to make moulds etc on receipt on the deposits. Because of being burnt once I doubt there would be enough interest from those on here to pay up and have LWS make these. Please prove me wrong, maybe some new members are more willing. Link to my/our last attempt http://the-corrado.net/showthread.php?54431-Carbon-Glass-Fibre-Boots/page5

If Andy from LWS Design is up for making the wings, thats great news. If they offer the same quality (if not better) than Perf trim, which they should being they use the same moulds etc then its a great backup. This should hopefully have more potential interest I just hope people put their money down when it comes to it.

The benefit of the company I found is that they have moulds already so no down payment needed to get started. Only issue is I have no idea of their quality. If they get back to me and cant get a pair of wings to me for around £200 I reckon its worth me taking a risk. If this supplier or my other link are no go's at least we have LWS to help.

Just for everyones info, Im not here to take any business away or undercut anyone. Those of you who know me, know Ive been trying to source composite panels for some time now (based on weight saving and corrosion resistance the main reasoning). If LWS can help and can do competitive prices I would be more than happy to go with LWS.

Any idea on costs from LWS for the panels John?

Just re-read some of the old boot group buy. Perfermance trim would have charged £280 for fibreglass boots, pretty similar to the guys Ive found.

Hi Sam, in response to your thoughts. I have every confidence in LWS Designs product, commitment, and business ethics. Indeed next week i will be fitting an LWS carbon roof skin to a forum members Corrado. They have secured purchase of the ex Performance Trim moulds, which were beyond question, and will be put to good use once more in their new role with LWS.

With regard to the failed attempt to raise interest last time around, I don't think we can lay this at the then Performance Trim door. The deal fell short of going through for a wide number of reasons. Panel specification, composite type, individuals financial situation etc were all in the mix. Despite the efforts of those proposing a new product, and no matter how positive it's merits, it will not always grip others in the same way.

I have simply made a new proposal to LWS Designs asking them to consider manufacture of an all carbon fibre Corrado tailgate. I have 2 units already required, leaving 3 more interested parties to find. I do not as yet have a price, but clearly it is going to be comparable to the cost of a similarly constructed bonnet. LWS Designs will consider all aspects of this proposal post January, and come back to me with detail. For the time being I am interested to see if any others are keen to acquire this item. I don't believe there should be any issues regarding confidence or questionability over any aspect of LWS Designs. As I have said before, we should embrace and support all UK based manufacturers, and Specialists that serve to support the Corrado, especially now that genuine parts are so poorly supported.

im keen on a tailgate, doors and wings, all of which im suffering rust, and will be costly to rectify, if the fit and finish is good, its an ideal replacment considering, panels are now obsolete from vw, i believe this is the only way forward to keeping /older rados on the road, even though i like to keep them original as possible. love to sse some photos of the finished items.

John, just to be clear I wasnt bad mouthing Perf Trim. I found them to be very professional and good guys to talk to, shame they went under. I did see that the Perf trim was bought by LWS so agreed the quality should still be possible by LWS.

My German contact have got back to me and have offered to make me a late spec pair of fibreglass wings without indicator holes so Ill be looking to buy these fairly soon, that is, unless the LWS wings look to be a likely option.

The German supplier can do carbon wings but they said the costs would be much higher, roughly €700! This seems a bit high but discussions can be made to try and bring this down if we get a group buy off the ground.

Bit tight on cash at the mo, but come pay day I will be looking to buy a pair of fibreglass wings from them. Anyone fancy taking the plunge with me to save on postage and possibly piece part cost (as Im paying full price due to one off single order)?

I do have a further worry of tyre to arch contact and the possibility of cracking the wings. I run very close to the arches and may end up damaging them often. I guesse FG is easy to repair?

I've looked in to this as well.

The early Corrado wings are still available from VW Heritage they are £312.00 plus carriage,

shipping is 3 to 6 weeks from Germany.

I’ve thought about purchasing the early wing and changing the wheel arch to that of the later wing,

this can be done by cutting out the bulge of the arch and changing them over by welding them in,

or just to build the arch out to that of the late wing by using fibre glass or you could use lead,

which they used back in the day.

My mate is a panel beater who said he might be able to do something ?

I’m not promising anything but there could be a chance to get these dam late wings sorted out for good.

Carbon fiber is good but it’s just too expensive,

and a whole wing made out of fibre glass may well crack over time,

the only other thing which might be good is to have them made out of aluminium.

My mate has made panels before out of steel and aluminium for some vehicles,

but it’s not a cheap or fast process.

So just modifying the early wings could be the way forward.

I’ll be talking to him later today if not on Monday 22nd April 2013,

as my O/S/F wing is rusted but only lower down near to the door sill,

so I’ll find out what he thinks regarding the Corrado late wing issue.

Right I've been able to have a word with my mate,

who has said he'll be able to repair my O/S/F wing,

plus he said he can make moulds of my wings in fibre glass to try it and see how they look.

Plus he said he can 100% modify a new early wing no problem by making the arch bulge wider.

So like I say in the next few weeks I'll be having the wing repaired and then have both wings taken off to make the moulds.
