VW_chris 10 Posted May 15, 2013 Do you think an MOT tester wouldn't notice the abs pump bolted to the bulkhead? Or the sensor wiring to the hubs? yeah obviously, he will see the physical system, but what im saying is that because the ABS light doesnt illuminate, doesnt meant the system is not working, for all he knows the light may only illuminate if there is a fault, i.e. a break in a circuit. not every MOT tester has knowledge of every car on the road, nor the time to research if certain things are right on the vehicle, MOT`s are timed on a computer and the tester has a certain ammount of time to carry the test out in. he can only go off what he knows is right, if the lights on, theres a fault with the system, if its off, the system is fine. with regards to MOT regulations, its fair enough VOSA saying "right, if a cars ABS light doesnt light up then go out, its a failure" but as far as im aware this would only strictly apply to new vehicles i.e. 2000+ they cant expect a classic car to meet modern car standards, its not fair. because a bulb doesnt illuminate then go out, the same way as it does on a modern car, it surely cant fail for it, its the same with catalytic converters on old vehicles, if it was fitted with one at the factory, but is not required for an mot , the vehicle cant fail on emmisions because there is no physical cat there if youve taken it out as they were not fitted to every vehicle at the time the vehicle was made. basically all im trying to say is, if the lights out in theory it shouldnt fail as it is not indicating a fault, however with regards to new MOT regulations, they cannot expect a 20+ year old car to meet 2013 standards for new vehicles. its impossible, it would put every classic car pretty much off the road. VW_chris 10 Posted August 26, 2013 *****BIG UPDATE***** Athough its been a while since ive updated this, rest assured things have not stopped happening to my baby, First big change, a full heated black leather interior, i absolutly love it, heated seats work champion. hardest part of doing it was working out where to plug the wiring loom in, but in the end i just wired it up to the cigarette lighter, constant live so i can have heated seats without ignition needing to be on. also, i hate corrade door cards. in the rear shot Then i finally got round to replacing the rear parcel shelf, so much better not seeing 6x9`s all the time and whilst i was there i made my rear speakers work again Then some wizardry happened with a set of Audi Coupe door locks ...... mmmm chrome. Then, it was the turn of the 288mm brake upgrade to get some paint and from then on ive just been enjoying the car, apart from cleaning/maintaining it, shes getting pretty much where i want her to be now, just a bit of paint in a few places and a wheel refurb left to do, amazing looking back through the photos on here and seeing how much shes changed! bit of a posing shot.... also some pics of my baby and my best mates pride and joy Then we all had a run over to cumbria vags, which was pretty good, although i did prefer the year previous. VW_chris 10 Posted August 26, 2013 yeah, not a mod for the faint hearted as the only way to get them to work was my using parts of my origional door locks. i pulled my set of this model, 2.0 20v, non turbo, FWD. nothing special so assume most models will have them fitted. VW_chris 10 Posted September 5, 2013 yeah, was a faff on to fit the drivers side, which will work once i replace the door handle which has broke (HA!) havnt fitted the passenger side as it needs a bit of "adaptation" to make it fit, wont be doing that untill the drivers door handle is fixed, i like being able to get in and out of the car haha

VW_chris 10 Posted September 4, 2014 SO, in the last few months, many things has happened to my corrado, of which includes new headlights, fogs and indicators and an engine rebuild so i took me rocker cover off to see if i could fix a leak that i had ton the right hand side rear of the cam/timing cover, only to have a completely shagged timing guide greet me, along with slack chains. i had planned on re-building the engine over christmas, but its came early. not touching the bottom end, everything is 100% there so im not even bothering, ill be fixing the worn out valve oil seals, poor sealing valves, knackered chains and an opportunity for more power. so got the head off, no messing round and stripped it all down, the exhaust valves were pretty rotten... so cleaned them up nicely along with the intake valves, all to a very nice, polished standard. then it was onto the cylinder head ports, where it went from this (you can see how badly pitted the valve seat is) to this, both the inlet and exhaust ports cleaned up nicely; once all the valve train was out, into the dishwasher for 2 hours, to remove any bits of wire brush, and just general crap i couldnt reach then, swapped out the old valve stem oil seals, which compared with the new ones, are a massive improvement. used a specialist tool to do the job (on the left) from nissan, perks of the job ;) from there, the valves got there final lapping in (once before the head went into the dishwasher, once after to ensure a 100% seal) , then all the valve train went back into the cylinder head. job done. now onto a cleaning of the cylinder block, you can see why im not re-building the block here, you can still see the honing of the bores from factory, plus not too long ago, she ran 190bhp with 185ft.lbs of torque. so i know the bottom end, is sound. parts. now. ive had a hell of a debate with myself over what parts i should get to replace the worn out parts. febi bilstein as OE spec for timing chains, guides and tensioners. febi bilstein for head bolts and to top it off, a raise in compression from 10:1 to 10.5:1 using a "mk4 gasket" or, a metal 3 layer head gasket for the 12v vr6 lump, sourced through The Phirm. everythings here apart from my timing chains, but im in no rush for them, i plan on getting my cylinder head back on tommorow, without cams, then ill be moving the car from my driveway, to a unit near my work in sunderland, which i will hopefully be moving into this weekend! got another part on the way as of now on the way, a 1.8t intake temp sensor (verified 2whp) :thumbleft: cant wait till its all back together now, bring the NOISE

VW_chris 10 Posted September 4, 2014 cheers jim, been a while since i last had a canny update, tend to do it in big lumps rather than every other week as im usually working on it or at work.... ive got 2 boxes worth of parts to fit, also completely forgot to add my clocks which are now a late/early mash up which looks pretty sweet ;) im sure therll be a video of the first crank/run out ;)

sexybourbon 0 Posted September 4, 2014 Nice work man whats the deal with the sensor ?? And im planning on using a mk4 metal head gasket , do you know what gains are actually there to have , the only reason i was going to do it was to see what the out come is , as iv read a few different reviews on doing it
VW_chris 10 Posted September 4, 2014 With the 1.8t intake temp sensor, if you've ever had it out, youl notice it's just a small rod if you like, quite literally bolted to the intake. Which as youl know, gets very hot. Now with the 1.8t version, it sits further inside the intake which will give a more accurate reading for the ecu. Guaranteed 2whp of it, I'm expecting 2/3 maybe even 4 off the coolant delete I've done on the throttle body, cooler intake temps FTW. The mk4 head gasket is simple, it's a lot thinner than the paper based one and therefore raises the compression from 10:1 to 10.5:1, which is a lot. 5% increase in compression so expect to see a 5-10% increase in power, roughly works out at 8-10whp. Combined with the IAT, decat, filter, timing set up properly, ported/polished head, I'm hoping to be running 210/220 without a map. It ran 190whp a couple months ago, so once she's all done and dusted, I'll get her dynod again too see how much I've ACTUALLY made ;)
VW_chris 10 Posted September 30, 2014 (edited) so, shes all up and running, but boy was it a job to get her there! started off by moving her to her new home, a unit which ive moved into with a couple other dubnuts. (full of mk1, mk2, mk3 golf, cabby, VR6`s) so, this is where we were up to before moving her down to the unit, the head was back on! and the process of building the engine back up and pulling the gearbox out. the process of pulling the gearbox out began in the time from getting it there 6pm, till god knows when in the morning.... but it was out! then the cleaning, couldnt bear to put something so dirty back in the car, plus it was a pain in the arse to get out, and going of corrados, if it was a pain in the arse to get out, itl be 10x worse to get back in, and i couldnt be chewed with getting black.... so the gearbox got a damn good clean whilst it was out! which took a long, long time...... regreased the bearing and pivot points for the clutch plate too (clutch was in mint cond. so didnt replace) then it was time to get down to business, replacing the timing chains, the upppers, were to put it simply, ****ed. one guide fell to bits removing it, the other wasnt far away. this is all done, and ready to go back together! took 2 weeks for the chains to come, was i sick waiting for them, you bet. now to the box... which we used an engine hoist to get back in after about 2 hours of failing to get it back in using jacks and manpower. but it was in, and the rebuilding could begin! for the next week, i spent 4-6 hours a day down at the unit before and off work (10 mins away form nissan ;) ) to get it done. pretty much all built back up (in a runable condition) so IF something went wrong and i needed to strip it all back down, i could easily and quickly. and with that, came the moment where i could start her for the first time! but because of this *******, that didnt happen, the second i conected the battery the alarm shorted out frying my clocks, harness for the clocks and the fuse box, seeing loads of smoke fill up the cabin of your pride and joy, is not fun. (what happened was when topping up the cooling system, water got onto/into the alarm, which took everything out when i hooked the battery up) firstly, who on earth at VW thought it would be a cracking idea to not only mount all the electrics for the alarm in the engine bay, where water/dirt are present 24/7, but not only that, under the coolant resevoir! so you can all guess what happened next.... then, whilst stripping the interior out, we bumped into the man who installed the alarm again, this time, with his fantastic wiring skills. i am genuinly impressed with how poorly it was wired in, like, i didnt know what to say when i saw it. you can see how hot the connections have been getting. but at least theres some electrical tape on the wire next to it. thank god! anyway, 3 sections of new harness were salvaged from a scrapyard out of a mk3 golf and corrado. which fixed all the issues puctured, and now it looks like.... then replaced the fusebox, i couldnt see any obvious signs of tracing/burnt wires/damage, but it stank. which was good enough for me to swap it. once again, a mk3 GTI came to the rescue. anyway, away once the fuse box was replaced, all the wiring was swapped out, and repaired, we were good to go! needless to say, it started up flawlessly, not a hitch, so, everything went back together that night and i spent some time cleaning and just admiring my work! and just last weekend she was re-insured, and taken to rothbury for a bit of testing which went fantastically! heres a bit of a video of how she ran, best played loud! http://videobam.com/vPNQu Edited September 30, 2014 by VW_chris

VW_chris 10 Posted October 4, 2014 Cheers! I've still got a fair bit left to do to her before I'll be 100% happy, feeling she needs a remap now to gain the full potential of all the mods, plus the clocks that are in are out of a 16v rado, so if anyone wants to swap for VR clocks, the offers there haha
VW_chris 10 Posted September 26, 2015 i think a bit of an update is in order! been quite a while since this was updated, in that time ill try and remember everything ive done to it.... since the rebuild last year (still going strong :thumbleft: ) i decided a dyno was needed, more to see if anything had came out of it she ran 205 BHP with 203 FTlb. torque, pretty damn impressed, 15+BHP up since the rebuild, happy days. got bored one day, id seen a few rados with the MK4 "joey mod" quite liked the idea, ive got a spare set of lights kicking about if i didnt like it and thought why not, well impressed with the results, painted with engine laquer of all things.... looks wise, she hasnt changed other than that, under body though, different story.... back end rebuild with new discs, pads, bearings, bushes, calipers and brake lines, back axle even saw a lick of paint too :thumbleft: wasnt as bad as the mk4 i had for changing the bushes.... didnt make them any easier going in though, ended up putting the back axle in the back of the scirocco and taking it to get fully pressed it, bit of a nightmare, but done and back on the car :thumbleft: after the back axle rebuild, i moved onto quality stuff (which is my job at Nissan) changed the door pins, had a terrific knock from the passenger door, turned out to be the rotten door pin, NO CHANCE that was coming out, so out with the grinder, and from inside the rear quater, removed the captive nut, another job done :thumbleft: next, was the turn of the cooling system, id had problems with over heating if it sat for long periods of time, id replaced the fan relay 3 times, countless sensors, thermostat ect trying to fix it, only thing left was the water pump.... thinking, nahhh... someone has got to have done it in the last 24 years, went out the window a bit.... NOW ive got the opposite problem where it now doesnt heat up to 90, just chills around 70.... mapping wise, i dont know what these are like, will it still run on a cold start map at 70??? any answers appriciated  anyway, moving on from changing the water pump (among many other things that weekend inc a full service) we went to the MOTHERLAND! it had literally been a dream to drive over to germany, so, with the car being in pretty much spot on condition, mechanically anyway, i thought to balls with it, this trip was planned in less than 24 hours! got the ferry the next day and only stopping on the ferry, we hit belguim! carrying on through to Aachen, and stopping there for 5 hours in the daytime for sleep, next stop, the RING. i can honestly say, driving accross europe was one of the best things ive done, it was so good, that when i got back after 4 days, i went again, 2 days later. apologies for the non topic related photos, but im sure you guys wont mind :thumbleft: this is on route to Adolf Hitlers holiday home, more recently noticeable because of "monuments men" which filmed the story of stolen nazi art behind found here in the closing days of the war. this was on route to a pretty freaking awesome place, bet you cant guess..... such an epic day, the quality of cars there, ferrari, lambo, ferrari, porsche, SLS, camaro, mustang, corrado..... managed to find some pics taken too! Biggest thing i found myself backing off on the corners i usually crashed on, on forza... all good though, not a hitch of bother  after though, she was cooked, tyres were well and truely scorching, brakes cooked, engine oil steaming, she got a much deserved break after that :thumbleft: from the ring, went to a car museum in dusseldorf, which is definaly worth the visit if ever you pass :thumbleft: on from dusseldorf, being a pretty big ww1/ww2 enthusiast, there was only one place to go from there, Ypres. seeing the church that was once reduced to gravel, was quite a sight. they hold a ceremony here EVERY day to remember those lost at 8pm. the streets are always packed. back from germany and belguim, having missed a few places i REALLY wanted to go, i went back.... i had the time off and thought balls to it, i can live with a tight couple of months. done EXACTLY the same thing again, none stop all the way to france, stopping just outside of normandy. i spent a long time here, one of the first few places i visited, normandy war graves. from here, we headed off to Le mans. which seeing all the old 24 hour cars, was epic. off from Le man, we (me and my brother) headed to heiley, little town just south of Ypres, where my great great grand farther is buried. being the first members of our family to have visited (which i thinks quite sad) having 5 war planes fly over in formation shortly before finding his grave, was an experience. from heiley, stopping in Ypres again, because sadly i missed the "Last Post" ceremony when i was there the week before. seeing the menin gate, which as it happens, was "too small" for all of the soldiers names to be listed on, who have no known grave so they needed to build another monument. I had planned on going back for remembrance day in november, which is mainly dependant on other people getting pass ports sorted out... which im expecting to fall though, shame really. but back to the corrado, WHICH i havnt mentioned, never faulted, so much as stuttered or caused me any bother at all, i had to top the coolant up (radiator leaks a little bit) but other than that, every tool i took, went un-used :thumbleft: doing over 3,000 miles in 2 weeks, and being used, quite a lot before that... shes back into needing repairs, so, after putting a full set of toyo proxies on her last month, im now waiting on a 6 branch stainless manifold, 2 engine mounts, a radiator, oil pump and header tank coming through the post, STAY TUNED FOR MORE :thumbleft:
