Vr6 & R32 supercharger kits

Supercharger? Got a V6 not a G40 or G60? Well we're hugely proud to be able to offer the RUF Supercharger kits for VW's great VR6 and R32 powerplants!!!

 

The Stage 1 VR6 kit comes in at £3,380 for a simple bolt on, drive off kit pushing the engine up to 240BHP!

 

The Stage 1 MkV R32 kit adds 55BHP to the stock engine, this kit comes in at £5,350.

 

We can offer kits for the MkIV V5, 2.8 V6, R32 & Audi TT/A3 3.2V6 engines as well, all kits range from Stage 1-3 with varying levels of BHP increases.

Are these a sealed unit? Whats the plenum style section for before the throttle body? 40hp seems quite low, I was under the impression 70bhp is the norm for a s/c on the VR.

Google "RUF Kompressor R32". Loads of info. Not to be confused with the RUF Porsche tuners.

 

It is a sealed unit. Self lubricated. No oil feed or return required, which makes things a lot easier and more reliable. It looks like the old Z-Engineering charger to me. Maybe RUF bought the designs and have modernised it a bit. The old Zeds used to work really well on the VR6.

 

I take it this is a centrifugal charger, so the quoted PSI won't be seen until the redline?

As said yes they're completely sealed and self lubricated, the Stage 1 kit is a jump of 50bhp on the Corrado engine, the Golf engine should reach similar power a bigger power jump, not 40bhp, as this is running very low boost (0.4bar), Stage 2 gives you 100bhp which is similar to what the ZF Engineering kits ran.

 

These aren't ZF Engineering chargers though, they are a similar compressor design but driven by belt not gears so there's no irritating rattle on idle.

 

The plenum section is the charge cooler used in the Stage 3 kit :)

 

Yes it's centrifugal so power will keep climbing with revs like a G-Lader does

Seems a lot to me for a small gain. Especially for the R32.

 

My rotrex set up cost less and near on 300bhp, albeit that was second hand.

The cost of this is comparable to new Vortech and Rotrex kits. Rotrex is not really a true price as you also have to lower the comp and consider the clutch when upgrading due to the turbo like performance.

 

2nd hand charger kits are always cheaper though, the issue is finding one.

Mine was also a lot cheaper than this but I had to buy the charger and then fabricate everything else. Luckily MB motorsport can fab aluminium and is pretty cheap for the skills and Vince is there for mapping.

Well we can't compare to second hand! The Rotrex kit from JBS is quoted as approximately £5,500 for 350bhp, the kit we're offering for same power would be £5,750 but a certain price.

 

It isn't something we've designed in house so the price is aimed around this.

 

As for power, again it's not something we've done in house, we're going on our suppliers figures, we'd love to see if some playing can be done to squeeze more out :)

I should add then while it was cheaper in cash to buy the charger and frabricate......I must have spent 20 hours researching and trying things out. So actually my kit cost a lot more in man hours

Perhaps I was a tad negative, I'm sure this will appeal to others but possibly some different

options might help as it's a lot to spend for (and I say it loosely) only 240bhp. If for an extra few hundred £s you can get to near 300bhp then seems a lot better bang for buck. What would the install pictured cost for eg with the charge cooler?

 

And I meant I thought the r32 would yield more than a 50bhp gain for such a large cost. But I am tight :)

 

Any yes I had to help fabricate a lot of my kit which was a nightmare at times but I enjoyed this and it helped me understand the process.

Yeah Craig did you have a look at the RUF one Kev posted earlier in the thread their number's are saying 360bhp on the Mk4 R32 engine which is over 100bhp increase I would love to do it but it's totally dead money and find it hard to justify it mine is Rapid with 250 bhp plus I am tight like you Craig. No "Tight Scotsmen Jokes please"

The appeal will be to folk who want a simple bolt on / bolt off install. It doesn't get much simpler than this :)

 

I remember the days of having to whack a steel stake into the sump of my VR6 for the VF Engineering kit's oil return, and I was never really happy with a low pressure oil return hitting a wall of oil either!

 

55hp doesn't sound much of a hike for the R32, and you're right, it isn't :) All things being equal, 1 bar of boost should endow the R32 with up to 500hp if the compressor size and mapping are correct. 250 / 15 = 16.6hp per psi, therefore 6psi should give you 100hp.

 

In reality, it's not quite as neat and tidy as that. If using a suitably sized turbo, 6psi would certainly bag you that 100hp. Supers sap some of the power they make unfortunately and will never be as efficient as a turbo. Also, the R32 also has 11.3:1 compression, so can't run much timing with boost. They run very low timing as standard and still pink!

 

RUF also appear to use the same compressor for the 2.8 and 3.2 litre. The R32 needs a bigger one really. It's not as simple as throwing a smaller pulley on it. The compressor wheel size is still the limiting factor, as was so clearly demonstrated by the Vortech V9 kits 6-7 years ago.

 

IMO and I'm not bashing OCD here as it's not their own kit, but S/C kits shouldn't cost £5K plus anymore. You could give your car to Stealth Racing and come away with 360hp from 9psi of his royal turboness for not a lot more and of course, you have another 140hp or so of potential sitting there waiting to be unleashed. Not so easy extracting more power from S/Cs.

 

As I say, it boils down to what folk want. A simple bolt on giving 55hp, which is better value than NA tuning (certainly on the R32), or the complication and heat management issues of turbos. Horses for courses really :)

 

Personally, I think I'd rather spend £5000+ on a 500hp electric motor and some batteries :)

Couldn't agree more! We've not brought this out to break records just because I've had people asking, I've looked about done my research and come back with something that's going to be future proof and has plenty of upgrade options and also covers the the VR engines unlike some other kits or kits that seem confusing to establish exactly what is needed!

 

We are looking into turbo kits too but until we've got those nailed down we won't be saying anymore ;)

 

Remember we are a G60/G40 specialists so this is and always will be our main aim! I'd just want to be able to offer people something different if they ask :)

Absolutely and thanks for bringing it to our attention! It's definitely a nice looking kit and the self lubing is a real plus point imo. As are the quieter running and lower intake temps compared to other kits, which is important when running stock compression.

 

The turbo kits sound intriguing :)
