Jim Bowen 1 Posted November 25, 2013 Do they cost a lot from VW? Is there a complete kit you can buy, so both chains, tensioners and the guides? Seen a FEBI version, are they decent enough to use? Even that is around £
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted November 25, 2013 When is the forum going to kick the stuck "VR6 chains" record? There is no 'kit' unless you buy from America. Most people just take the parts list from the wiki to the dealer.
Jim Bowen 1 Posted November 25, 2013 Just that i saw a FEBI complete timing kit and wondered if its ok or just best to use VW parts and pay usually about twice as much money
MattPc 0 Posted December 4, 2013 I've done two Timing chains now, always purchased OEM parts from VW dealer in Chelmsford. heres a link to the list of parts that I purchased with a screen shot from ETKA. My 'kit' cost me £234.01 2 years ago. http://the-corrado.net/showthread.php?t=72577&highlight=timing+chain Matt
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted December 4, 2013 Cheers for that /\ Might be worth typing it out as a list and stickying the post. Jim, I wouldn't use Febi parts tbh. Stick to the genuine stuff!
DriverVR6 11 Posted December 8, 2013 MattPc, the part numbers you kindly supplied, are they for the later one piece chain guide (13 on diagram) and later chain tensioner bolt (11 on diagram)? IE, the improved mk4 ones? Kev, I was going to buy the following in option 3 form. http://vwgolfr32.co.uk/shop/VR6-Timing.htm Is this the FEBI one that you would NOT recommend? kerrly 0 Posted March 27, 2014 ^ confused. From another topic a few years ago on timing chains: The original VW chain parts break up and fall into the sump, so not really a good advert for VAG longevity :D Loads of people use Febi chain parts, including Schimmel and Stealth and I've never heard of a failure. Done 50K on my engines using Febi chain parts with zero issues. I'm about to order the Febi kit, £140 on ebay.
seanl82 23 Posted March 28, 2014 I ordered a febi top guide rail last night. My genuine chain "kit" has been in about 6k miles and I noticed yesterday when I took the top cover off that the middle bolt hole had broken off, and the guide had snapped in two. Another part I hadn't banked on having to replace during the "clean up".
