Tigerfish 10 Posted July 1, 2014 How much play should there be in the gearbox end with the balance weight? The gear changes are OK, i.e. I can get all gears ok, but there is a fair bit of sloppiness in the gear stick end. The linkage at the gearbox end, the one with the balance weight, wobbles all over the shop, should it do that?
Mr_Rossy 0 Posted July 2, 2014 Mine is the same as yours too, I've found that the actual shifter (The gear stick) has play at the bottom. The way for find this is to feel down the shaft (This isn't porn) and try to slide the shaft left nad right from the bottom. mine moves about 1-2cm!!) I've ordered a new short shift from Dave16v for £45 in the hope that this will cure the problem (I'd be shocked if it doesn't) Cheers M

Mr_Rossy 0 Posted July 22, 2014 I found that mine was caused by the C clip missing off the end of the shaft! I've now got a spare short shift for sale / or return to Dave. Matt
fendervg 32 Posted July 22, 2014 Also check the engine and gearbox mounts as these can lead to sloppy shifting if worn. Just had mine replaced and made a huge difference. There is a special tool from VAG for aligning the gearshift lever, but most mechanics do it by feel. - I have one, so if anyone in Ireland wants to use it, PM me.
