menace2society 0 Posted April 22, 2003 i recently took my 1.8 16v to have it serviced at vw, they did all the work and said a whole lot more needed doing and quoted me a £1000 extra, so i took it to the local mechanic and he replaced the near side front ball joint for me (including some other work as well). The car used to and still clanks and clonks when it goes over a bump, i took it back to him and the mechanic who replaced the ball joint said that the shock needed replacing, i didn't believe him as when i pushed down on the car the suspension would stabilise it immediately, so i guessed it could be the top mount, i ordered a new one from eurocarparts, and got another mechanic to fit this today, however he didn't use any new bolts or nuts when putting the old suspension back together. Driving it after wards, i realised that the clanking sounding had gotten far more extensive, i hear these sounds when i turn to the left now and especially when i go over bumps. So i took it back to him again today and he had a 2nd look at it and said that it isn't the shock but we require new bolts for the ball joint. Are they chatting shite or do they know what they are talking about? Can anyone please shed some light on this matter? :cry: Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Kevin Bacon 5 Posted April 22, 2003 Are you sure the clattering noise isn't corroded brake stone guards or something? If you're getting a clonk through the column, it could be anything - Bushes, top mounts (ECP ones are shite by the way), ball joints, wheel bearings, top and bottom column bearings, steering rack, tie rod ends etc etc Take it somewhere decent (VAG engineers are incompetent compared to specialists) and they'll trace it immediately, rather than going through a process of elimination which is both expensive and frustrating. menace2society 0 Posted April 23, 2003 lads i took it to another mechanic today he was recommended by a friend, he sounded like he knew his stuff he took it for a test drive and said that he thinks that the spring may be broken but not for sure, ill have to take it to him tommorrow morning and hell have a thorough inspection then, how much should i be paying him to fix this problem, if it is the case? menace2society 0 Posted April 24, 2003 hi woody i had to take it to the mechanic cos it made me cry :mad: every time i heard that clank, hes checking it out now and gonna let me know whats up with it v soon, ill keep you informed mate hi just got the call from the mechanic and aaarggghh he said that the wishbone is knackered on the near side and apparently it is the cause of the noises, apparently the one on the off side is also knackered a bit and so as suggested by him be replaced as well, he says that the wishbones cost about £75.00 each, then i asked him a about euro car parts he said that he had phoned them and they stock only the crappy ones about £35.00 each, alll in all its gonna cost me £170.00 altogether :shock: inlcuding labour, i think he's ripping me off so im gonna pick up the car and take it to another mechanic and get another opinion, what d'ya think folks??? I did 2 months ago, and already the bush has disintegrated meaning a seriously sloppy front end (not good as I've jsut put coilovers on and want to rag it...) I phoned them up yesterday and they were very apologetic, but being apologetic isn't gunna help me get under the car and sort out new ones, nor pay for the tracking to be done again... You get what you pay for... :x (If the rubbers have gone, jack the car up and try and wobble the wheel side to side (ie grip at 3 and 9 o'clock) if there's play there and not top to bottom (12 and 6 o'clock) then look at the bushes as you wobble the wheel and you, or at least I, can see the rubber move...) menace2society 0 Posted April 24, 2003 thanks for the advice man but i just got it checked out by quick fit engineers and he showed me that the wishbones are fine, instead when the previous mechanic replaced the top mount, he didnt put the shock back in properly and the spring seems to be far too close to the inside of the wing thereby hitting it whenever going over bumps, im gonna take it back to the mechanic who replaced the top mount and get my moneys worth! :x Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

chuck 0 Posted May 12, 2003 I have a similar clank when hitting a speed bump or a big pothole. I think I've found what it is, though i have no idea how to fix it. Just replaced wishbones and roll bars (for a whole oyter reason), so know what everything looks like underside. Where the roll bar bends aroung its attachment point on the wishbone, it fouls with the wishbone. So every time I hit a bump and it pulls the roll bar away from the wishbone, it clanks as it hits it again. Presumably hitting a speed bump, relieves the foul as the suspension displaces, but clanks again when it returns. Might take a wee nick out of the wishbone sometime, see if that fixes it. But new wishbone, bushes, ball joints, top mounts, shocks, springs, bumpstops, did not get rid of it! Menace2society, you get that sorted? or you still have a clank? I initially got the top mount replaced, after this the clanking got much much worser, so i took it back to the mechanics and realised that they hadn't put the shock back properly, the spring was hitting the inside of the wing!!! can you believe that... so i got them to take everything apart and put it all back together under my supervision... ha ha ha!! and guess this time they did it perfectly and no clanking... :D Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Rams 0 Posted May 16, 2003 I would recommend that you get the allignement checked as the hub carrier can affect the tow in / out when doing the bolts back up to hold the strut in place. chuck 0 Posted May 18, 2003 Ha, fixed mine too. Just shows you that same symptoms don't always lead to same problem. Just fitted Eibach arb's, and being a bigger diameter were hitting the wishbone close to their mount. Bought a few extra washers from VW and kinda spaced the arb away from the wishbone.
