Cat Heat shield (Lower) VR6 - missing - is it necessary?

Recommended Posts

I have only just noticed that the lower heat shield is missing from under my catalytic converter. It is a gauze type shield I think. Is it necessary?? I understand that they arent sold separately and I have no idea why/when it was removed.

The upper one is important as it stops the gear linkage absorbing heat but the lower one is really only there to protect the car and stop you catching fire whilst parked on long grass!

I took mine off and I dont part in long grass...

Yup, it rattled it self half off anyway and the angle grinder dealt with the rest, the alternative is to use a large jubilee clip...
