De-rusting and Detailing Paintwork

a word of warning, all rust must be sanded/ground out otherwise your just saving time , your probably end up with areas that once rust has been sanded out leave tiny pin hole specs of rust that you cant touch, these also need to go! , you can use a small drill bit on this as to not thin the surrounding metal to much, once your metal is clean and as rust free as you can get it, then seal it with an automotive 2k epoxy primer, you can either spray it or roll it or brush it you will need paint mixing cups to get the mixing ratios correct, when it drys after 24hrs you can sand it all flat and work off of that! your also allowed to put body filler on top of epoxy rather then to bare metal for its ability to protect the metal from corrosion, this is a water proof direct to metal primer unlike other primers which are pourus and let moisture seep in, rust converters etc etc dont actually stop the rust so make sure its all gone!!

Seller sold me car as CANDY WHITE - not sure if OEM?

Plan was to take to a good body shop I know.

But now can't justify cost - so looking at doing the worse bits myself...

I learnt the hard way when I bought paint matched to the code in the boot and sprayed part of a wing and a door to then find the paint didnt match. Turns out the car had had a cheap respray in a later VW colour

Wayne, ford candy white is not the same as vw candy white. Your best bet is to get an aerosol from vw. It's not the cheapest but it'll be the best match possible. It comes with lacquer too.

Etch primer if you're doing bare metal as it will adhere better. It won't make any difference if you're just touching stuff up. As long as you key it properly it'll be fine. The stuff from VW comes in a twin pack with base coat and lacquer. Like I said not the cheapest (around £15 last time I bought it) for 150ml each tin.

that price is for two canns , just by the one but fair enough, its like £11 ? really not bad considering your have a decent hard/glossy clear, FYI the normal spray can lacquer/clear isnt any good, its a completely different product to what the bodyshops use ,... with that stuff above you will have hardness and longevity and the right gloss.

Just that I no confident in much.

A DIY disaster.

And everything always go wrong.

 

So for paint job - I take cheaper / easier option for now.

My C paint job is bad patches everywhere - wouldn't harm another bad patch :eek:

 

 

But if say I start spraying the whole sunroof - then maybe pay more ...
