Mick's first Corrado

Recommended Posts

Hello all! Welcome to my build/restoration thread :) I am the proud owner of a K reg 2.0 16v and after posting on the forum and building some confidence I am going to share my story with you all. I am going to give a brief view into my ownership and what has changed with the car, any comment/criticisms are welcome to help me get a better understanding of being a Corrado owner.

So this is how it all started, I was playing the first Forza Horizon and those of you who have played it will know that the first car you have is a VR6 and I fell in love with the Corrado just from seeing it rendered in a game! I then did some more research and love the cars more and more. However I did suffer a setback in august 2015 as I was involved in a serve motorcycle accident which left me not being able to walk for a few months and ongoing issues to this day and into my future. So after months of physio and rehabilitation I drove again for the first time in January, but was unable to pilot a motorcycle again due to my limited range in my leg. So I needed a project that I could do small bits and bobs on to get me back to a relatively normal life again. So what better than a Corrado! I searched on eBay for months and found a guy selling a mk2 golf who had a Corrado project. One thing led to another and he let me buy the Corrado to fund his mk2, happy days! I bought her at the end of April 2016 and her she is on the back of the trailer and when she got home.

When I got the car I couldn’t resist not driving it. Being 20 years old and having an non-fault accident on your record it was expensive to get insured but I did it anyway as I had to drive it ;) it was missing a door trim piece, no speakers worked bar one of the dash ones, the heater fan wouldn’t work, sun roof and spoiler wouldn’t work, clutch cylinders failed, alloys wouldn’t hold air and it had an oil leak. A great start!

I ran it up until summer and it has since been in hibernation. I sorted the clutch, changed the rear lights to OEM, sorted the heater (but that that led to the dreaded heater matrix which I still have yet to do!) and my mother (who is an electronics engineer) helped me sorted the spoiler and sun roof. I have since been modding the car to make it a more pleasant and easy driving experience. First, I sorted the wheels as the tires were brand new but kept going flat! So I swapped them over for some nice 15” Borbet A’s. The reason for this as I wanted them to match the original alloy as much as possible so the tires would fit.

I then started to do little things, as my health prevents me standing/working for long periods of time I started to do all the little things on the car, such as sorting the front grill out and restoring it.

I then manged to pick up a full early grey leather interior from a fellow member to replace my cloth one. I adore the leather and love the rear seat hump! My friend came over and helped me fit in once I sorted the peeling part on the door cards. Pic of interior

I then had to sort the ghastly Wolfsburg Edition door lock pins with some OEM Jetta ones, they look much better now!

I then found some Lupo wiper blades and fitted them, a great mod!

I want to get the car relatively show worthy for this season and wanted to sort the sound system out. The last owner had made a right mess of the wiring. I manged to do both rears and one of the door cards but the other won’t work so some fault finding with mum is needed. This when I got my Audioscapes so I am using them now. I want to put a DAB radio so I can jam to Radio 80’s so I will update you all when I get round to sorting the goliath job of sorting the wiring.

And that’s about it at the moment. I got some floor mats from another fellow member and to complete the car. The heater matrix still needs doing and the oil leak. Then in the future I hope to update this thread with more details on how things are going. Thank you all for reading and thank you all for all the knowledge and support that you all have given me over this year of ownership. I have found the Corrado and this forum to be incredible and really help me with my recovery :) I look forward to seeing you all at shows and meet ups in the future, if the car is up to it of course ;) cheers guys,

Mick

Thanks mate, always liked the borbets. I think they suit the corrados well! And I know that'll be my next task, only running on the stock suspension due to the insurance being ridiculous!

Luckily all those faults were fixed by changing the fuses and a few loose/corroded connections.
