Thermostat?

Recommended Posts

Where is the thermostat on a 9A engine? Is it easy to replace? Don't need to yet but am interested for future reference.

Pretty certain it's in the same place as the rest of VW's 4 cylinder engines... In the plastic lower fitting on the waterpump itself...

Next to the PAS/Water pump pulley. You'll see a plastic elbow and a few hoses. remove the hoses, remove the 2 10mm bolts, prize off the plastic elbow, replace O ring, replace stat, refit it all, refill with coolant.

I'd also advise replacing the plastic housing as they get brittle with age and will almost certainly crack as you tighten it back up again... for the £5 they cost, it's not worth the hassle! ;) :D

Oh and if the Corrado 16V is anything like the Golf 16V, you might have to remove the PAS pump bracket to get to the water pump :x

Perhaps you should expand on this a little and add it to the 'How to' website.

Thanks for the info chaps.
