Recommended Engine Oil for 1.8 16V 1991

New owner here - just want to know what engine oil is recommended to use for the 1.8 16V - i saw a thread about oil in the G60s but couldnt find anything specific to the 16 valvers.

I used the same stuff in my Valver as I now use in my G60... VW's Quanta Silver oil... 8) It's good stuff... :)

Looking through my history i noticed mine had always been run on the gold stuff.

 

What's the difference? Did they have fully and semi synthetic oils back in the early nineties or is the gold / silver thing just a quality distinction?

CorradoWannabe, Synta Silver for the 16v, definately. Louie Lungbubble, Synta Gold is fully synthetic, more expensive and not necessary for the 16v.

 

Synta Silver is semi-synthetic, which is just what the 16v needs. Good oil, original VW spec., and not expensive.

Another thumbs up for silver from me too. I've used it for donkeys years. It's one of few oils that VW seals and tappets seem to agree with.
