Humming sound at certain speeds

I've got an intereting humming noise comming from the front of my 16v which gets louder at 30mph, dies away then gets louder again at 50mph to the point of very annoying.

If I take the car out of gear it still makes the noise at 50mph.

I have changed the front tyres, checked the rears, and given the wheels a shake to check the bearings.

There is no steering wheel vibration or anything else that appears strange. Does anyone have any ideas or has experienced this? Thanks.

Jack each wheel up in turn and spin it holding the road spring (the spring amplifies a worn bearing race) and compare side to side
