Top Mounts

Recommended Posts

Just been out to trial fit my new GSF Grill spoiler (which fits A1 by the way) and found that one of my front top mounts (pass side) looks like it has collapsed.... :x

How difficult to replace?

Seeing as the mounts look cheap - do I replace ALL of them?

Or just do the front?

I am assuming the rears will be a no go because of the passive rear steering effect?

Can anyone help?

Cheers

I have read it mate - very useful - doesnt actually say what bits I need though....

GSF have:

Top mount bearing

Top Mount

Top Mount Kit

:?:

I am assuming I need the kit per side for front? - £11 + VAT  cheap!

What about rear? - worth doing?

Bump stops?

You don't need to do the rear at the same time, you can just do the front.

The kit is what you need (the part number should be on the how-to?). The kit has both the mount and bearing in it. Why they sell it as separate parts as well, I have no idea.

I didn't do the bump stop when I was in there... if there is one at all?

Well I am thinking to tighten the car up a bit about doing them all - worth it or not?

I need new shocks really but they are going to have to wait for a while yet... but the originals are not leaking or anything

Unless the bump stops are knackered, dont bother replacing them

it takes shag al time to do the front top mount once you have all the tools at hand

should only need the 21mm swan neck spanner?

Well it depends on what you have already. According to the how-to...

10mm spanner

13mm and 15mm for caliper sliding pins

17mm socket

18mm spanner

18mm socket

21mm swan neck ring spanner

5mm Hex socket attchment

Spring compressors

Vice

Some string

bloody great big breaker bar to fit 18mm

PlusGas

Big hammer

Big flat head screwdriver

Crosshead screwdriver (pref. impact) for disk locating screw

- If above fails, steel drill bit :)

Is what you need.

you could always use a spark plug socket, with a big allen key to hold the strut still

I'd like to point out that the dousing of all the bolts in PlusGas overnight will make your life a million times easier. It's worth every penny.
