    My 993

haven't actually got a gallery thread for this one,the background to this is that in January 2005,my Mother sadly passed away very suddenly,so I was left with a 3 bed semi-detached house,as I was quite settled in the area of Aberdeen I stay in,me and the wife decided that we would sell my Mother's house and also our 2-bed semi and get a bigger house with at least a driveway and garage, and as all the proceeds from my Mother's house bar the legal fees would be direct to me,no mortgage to pay off etc,we sold both houses and found a nice 3 bed semi ex-showhouse on a corner plot too and the bonus was the fact it had a double driveway and best of all it had a double garage, anyway part of the deal with the wife was that we would put so much of my Mother's house proceeds into it,also put away a decent sum for a rainy day and best of all I could go and get a new car,my first thoughts were YES I'll go and buy a Brand New Boxster (the 987 model was just launched months previously) so that was what i thought would be the ideal buy,I test drove both the 2.7 and Boxster S and decided I wanted the Boxster S,priced/specced one up and it was coming to £43k!!!,then the Cayman S was away to be launched and i started thinking about one of them, but as they were £3k dearer to start with I started to get a reality check  ,spoke to a good friend who had bought a brand new 996 C4S just months previously and he asked me this question........."when you open your garage door, which would you rather see?...a Boxster/Cayman or a 911?",that was what done it for me,not only would I save money buying a 911(didn't want to spend £40k+ on a 996 when you could get into a 993 for under £30k,but it would save me losing a heap in depreciation,as it happened a customer of my in-law's was away to sell his 993 Carrera 4 that he had just bought 18months or so previously,I remembered the day he bought it and he came to the yard to pay his account in it,at the time I had sat in it thinking I wish i could have one of these, but knew I could never afford one, anyway i spoke to him and we agreed a deal subject to a PPI,all that went well and after money changed hands i owned a lovely low mile 95 993 Carrera 4 in midnight blue metallic with the RS aerokit, anyway here's pics of it first day of ownership first and only PCGB outing on a RR and just recently at a local motorshow mod wise Ive added HID's,RSR boxes, bigger tailpipes,Techart brake ducts(chinese copies) and I have just bought a brand new M033 suspension kit from Porsche for the bargain price of £417!!,I also have 1 set of 17inch O/E Cup 2 wheels,18inch mk1 996 GT3 wheels,18inch BBS RS2's and the 18inch TSW LeMans pictured above,Ive certainly become a wheel-whore in the past few years
  2. thats a beauty, what happened to your 80 Sport tho?
  3. jeepers, hadn't realised that this was last updated 5+years ago  a lot has certainly happened in that time, what with me having a bereavement, selling 2 houses then moving house, buying a 993,voluntary severence and going self-employed in that time life has been a tad hectic and I'm afraid the Storm has suffered the most  ,in fact from being Mot'd in Jan 2008 til I had it Mot'd again this year in April it had only done 200 miles between tests  ,certainly keeps its mileage down(just under 80k from 38k in 8 years of ownership) being self-employed and having the use of my 993 as well as the wife's Freelander 2,oh and of course my E-class taxi, tho this has managed 55k in just over 12 months  but the Storm is hopefully going to get a lot of time and money spent on it in the next few months,as I'm going for a full respray to address some minor rust issues and general wear n tear and so that the paint is uniform, these are some of the last pics I had of it,taken about 2 years ago since then it has had a pair of biege Recaro's fitted(robbed off a VR6 I bought then sold soon after swapping the seats and speedlines over),the RX2's have been sold on and its currently wearing the speedlines from the aforementioned VR6 donor car(which tbh Ive always preferred to the standard fit solitudes),these will be replaced with a set of gold centred genuine BBS LM's once the paintwork has been attended to hopefully in the next few weeks
  4. totally amazing the transformation from standard to lowered and RX2's,looks good,I had mine on RX2's as well, but its now wearing speedlines while I wait for it to go in for a respray and then putting my gold centred(genuine) LM's on oh btw, your Corrado won't ever qualify for free road tax under the current legislation, the 25 year tax exemption was stopped from being rolling in 1997/8,so cars only up to 1972/73 are tax exempt
  5. oh yes you did  seriously tho,I'm totally with you about loving the Focus RS,I'd even thought of changing my 993 for a new Focus RS
  6. selected Fords no mention of the Focus RS http://www.ford.co.uk/CurrentPromo/Scra ... s/Overview
  7. you might find it hard to do a scrappage deal on the Focus RS,as I think they are all sold out, also I believe there is a clause in the scheme whereas the car that is being bought has to have a quick delivery date
  8. yes if they were the right offset and pcd
  9. wild guess here, but I can't for the life of me see how VW would pack a BMW first aid box into one of their cars
  10. if depreaciation is a major concern then best go for air-cooled,less made over the years, the 996 and 997 are practically mass-produced compared to the 964/993,the only 996's that won't lose too much money now are GT2's and GT3's due to their low production amounts,Porsches normally change hands quite often, nothing about the car itself normally, just a case of fickle owners, owners who have a big balloon payment lease and are just changing before their term is up,owners who need a bigger car due to family needs, owners upgrading etc etc,I'm lucky with my 95 993 in that I'm only the 5th or 6th owner(IIRC) and I'm coming up to 4 years ownership,I do hanker after a 996 Turbo or even a 997 C4S,but the running costs are still in the £100k league for the Turbo, even if the purchase costs are now sub £30k,the GT3 I think would be wasted on me due to them being too track-focused
  11. those tailpipes am afraid look a bit chavvy on a NB 996,they're Turbo/C4S ones IIRC,also I would avoid the Savannha interior purely from a resale point of view, more important with a 996 due to the fact there are always so many of them for sale,Aerokit/GT3 styling actually suits the 996 as long as the PO hasn't badged it as the real deal Wendy best get yourself on to here http://www.911uk.com there will be a lot more advice there for you too,btw I'm Rodders on there and Asim is also on there as 993C2S
  12. its only LHD markets that the A/C was Factory fitted btw, yours would have been dealer fitted at some point, either when new or retro-fitted afterwards Coolant wise, only use the VW stuff,G12+ IIRC,tho do a search on here, dependant on how long the coolant has been in there if its the original stuff(surely to god not!!!) then if you mix it with anything else even after emptying the system, there is a small potential unless done correctly and properly flushed to have the remaining stuff gel up with the new stuff
  13. 1)Ive still got to get mine fitted, but IIRC its a case of pulling the plastic bits from the front and then remove the rubber stuff,I take it you have bought the plastic part as well as the rubber tape stuff that lines the groove?,as you have to be real carefull when removing the plastic 2)is this Jamex kit a coilover kit? or is it an actual height adjustable suspension kit?,if its neither then you'll have to change the springs 3)autoglym aqua wax 'express waxes wet cars',have you tried washing it again, with a stronger shampoo solution, then wash again as per normal and use the wax one panel at a time,as it sounds like it has dried in,tho bear in mind that the stuff really should be used if the car has recently been polished and you are trying to keep the polished bodywork protected 4)the front windows IIRC don't work together but one after the other, some C's do have one touch some don't no rhyme nor reason to it,your sunroof is perhaps cutting out due to the mechanism having some sort of resistance when closing?? 5)Diavia A/C was a dealer fit option,so the switches were fitted anywhere they could, the usual one is to relocate the ABS warning lamp to the switch blank beside the headlight switch, there was a Heater control unit that had A/C buttons but this was for LHD markets(more so N.America),the A/C is more than likely needing regassed,IIRC Kwik-fit are doing a money back deal on this if it doesnt lower your temp after they have regassed, tho tbh no doubt they will conditions like your A/C has to be faultless 6)as long as you don't have the factory immobiliser(94-on IIRC) that reads the key then just use any key cutter,as for the alarm fob,I had an issue with my 993's alarm in that I only had one fob,as it was of unknown origin I just replaced the whole system, fairly cheap as I kept the original Porsche immobiliser, and just went for a central locking/ultrasonic alarm 7)sounds more like the little foam bits on the tailgate are giving the noise,as the straps are really only for raising the parcel shelf when opening the tailgate,so are slack when the tailgate is shut
  14. Hi mate What have the running costs been like if you dont mind me asking? Thanks Matt not at all considering its a proper Sportscar as opposed to a hatchback based Sports Coupe the Corrado is,the running costs have been relatively easy, especially as it was a £60k car when new in 1995, anyway ive had it serviced 3 times since I bought it in October 2005,due to limited use over the past 2 years tho I have always put it in for a major rather than interim service, although the interval time wise hasn't been strictly adhered too,its oil has never looked to have needed changed earlier and there hasn't been any noticable difference running wise Jan 2006-£591 major service 60k OPC Jan 2006-engine wiring loom recall FOC OPC Feb 2006-£40 MOT local garage July 2006-£93 fan/drive belts OPC Feb 2007-£40 MOT local garage Aug 2007-£1300 major service, new clutch, transmission fluid, brake fluid,plugs(12-twin spark distributor),front discs/pads,front splitter painted, rear bumper support brackets replaced- Porsche specialist Oct 2007-£125 window guide rail replaced due to corrosion OPC Dec 2007-£831 new alternator and belts-warranty company contributed £535 to bill Jan 2008-£540 Pirelli p-zero 18 inch tyres supplied/fitted-local tyre place Jan 2008-£150 Steering geometry OPC Feb 2008-£60 Battery Halfords Feb 2008-£380 MOT,new rear discs and pads supplied and fitted-local garage Jul 2008-£250 old alarm removed and replaced with new one local auto electrician Feb 2009-£634 major service,MOT,distributor drive belt changed, cam cover gasket, headlight lenses replaced Porsche specialist May 2009-£420 M033 Porsche suspension kit(springs and shocks) supply only OPC in all close to £5k spent in close on 4 years/13k miles, although this sounds a high cost to run,the consensus of opinion when running a 993 is to budget approx £2k p/a,and of course Ive attended to the clutch which is an engine out job due to it being the Carrera 4,and both the front and rear brakes have been changed, the next thing on my list is the suspension which should cost me just under £1.5k if I replace the front wishbones too as well as including the M033 suspension kit Ive just recently bought mpg round town is just under 18mpg insurance is approx £630 p/a and is under an Admiral multicar policy, with my mate as a named driver too
  15. nah John,Ive got P-zero's on my 993's 18 inch alloys and they came to £300-ish for the pair, supplied and fitted Wouldn't be surprised if there were Porsche special recommended tyres (as there is for the Z4) with thier own suffix number. I know someone with the boxter-s who insured his tyres because of the cost of them. More money than sense in my mind. mine were the latest Porsche N-rated ones when I bought them last year
  16. Oh, well of course - esp. the 996 or Cayman - but sadly in the real world - its not going to happen. :( The Track Day Car share idea - surely taking continous sessions - with differing drivers - is somewhat overworking the car - isn't it ? Most sessions are 20 minutes unless its not an open pit lane. I guess this is better than a continous 2 hour drive ? What about several people having their own Track Cars and going to Track Days together  - actually might just as well set up our own race series - I know me - I would race you all . I have been told - I am just little competitive !! PM sent to you Tom & John. Anyway guys, lets stay on the main topic that was started here - the new Road Car. I am starting to think more Porsche - thanks to you lot. Someone has said about depreciation being less - well that has got to be quite a large consideration in this. A concern I do have with Porsche - despite the running costs - is, how easy would it be to sell ? There are hundreds and hundreds of them ??????? !!!!!!!!!! Views ? if you want little depreciation/ease of resale Porsche wise then you need to go for the air-cooled ones, the 986/987 Boxsters or 996/997 911's are sold in far greater numbers year per year than the air-cooled models,be it 3.2 Carrera,964 or 993,as these are the ones being sought after, although the water-cooled stuff are more suited for day-to-day driving, its all dependant on your budget and your preferences tbh,I have owned my 993 Carrera 4 for coming up to 4 years/13k miles and would like to think I have only lost around £4/5k in that time
  17. nah John,Ive got P-zero's on my 993's 18 inch alloys and they came to £300-ish for the pair, supplied and fitted
  18. at first i too thought that it was ABP or some other blue, but these 2 pics show the purple-tinge that mystic blue has
  19. unless its a low miler and in VGC I'd say its it would be worth under £1k,rare as they are for not much more you can buy much more performance
  20. my garage and driveway are still recovering from breaking a G60 3 years ago yes you can make more money out of it than selling the car whole, but you don't get the money in one lump sum just in dribs and drabs, also not the best idea if you ain't mechanically minded, not to mention the hassle with people saying they'll buy stuff and then let you down, ive still got a few bits leftover from the G60 I broke in 2006 if you can have patience and keep with selling the car, perhaps when the 5th gear article comes out it might renew interest in the Corrado again
  21. scirroco front meets Brera rear end
  22. What was it???!!!! Damn mods and their damn mod editing! lets just say if you don't eat pork, don't have a shower round at Kip's house
