I think the VR's are very strong engines! Dr Matt sums up well for other brands. I had a bm 325i sport and the head cracked at 90k with FBSH. Had a 540i, bore wear. I had a golf vr6 from 70 to 137k and it took plenty of stick and i know its still going strong now at over 170k. My corrado is bang on at 120k. Other halfs vento vr sounds and goes like a new car on 105k, and my garage have only done 1 head on a vr in 10 yrs, and that was because the lady ran it with no water in! All cars go wrong. But having said that, if you buy one you wont be disapointed. They are so punchy and sound fantastic, handle great, look understated, just do it. It will far outway any problems you have in the long run. Unlike TVRs where the huge grin factor still cant make up for the days its off the road. You can never justify a purchase like a raddo VR, especially when you have a 1 yr old monster and a big mortgage like me, so just do it and join the clan!

Read my thread, I've just done the 2 fuel rail pipes, £58+vat for 2 short rubber hoses, what a ripper. This is not a pleasant job. It was impossible to get the hoses off under the brake servo, as mentioned hard to get any purchase and they are massively tight on there! I did it all in the end, but it was very tricky for such a simple job. PM me if you want to know anything more about how I did it all in the end or you can phone me. If your local i'd give you a hand but no idea where you are?

I think i will put my now immaculately cleaned original air box back on as a test for the rest of the week.
-
Cheers guys, think i will do what Dr Matt says anyway, but Im wondering with Kev's comments if its my stupid green induction kit sucking hot air in then, as it does it when its fully hot and some stoppage. Oh dear, guess its time to go BMC then do you think ?? Glad its nothing serious as i really would be depressed this time. So missed driving it last week.

PS: Only ever use Optimax before fuel is mentioned, and i didnt pinch any of the fuel lines, honest.

Got mine going again with new fuel lines, hooooorah! Anyway, loving my first blat but it did something strange a couple of times yesturday and again once tonight. On full throttle at about 3500 i get a big hesitation and very obvious pinking for a split second then it continues up the rev range fine. Its idling ok and pulls like a train, just does this ever now and then? Im still not happy with my plug leads, could it be these? Its the pinking that bothers me, but have no idea what would make a VR pink with all the auto timing etc going on? I can put it in 5th at 35mph and nail it and it wont pink, its only every now and then at around the 3500/4000 when its really coming on cam that it does it just for a second? Fuel pump? Plug Leads? Timming chains--forget i mentioned that one please! :? :?:

I drove mine! After 10 days off the road and stupid amounts of hassle with my fuel pipes. Not to mention doing my best to chop the end off my typnging finjer! It has reminded me why i bothered though, come to mumma, I do love that noise! Fitted a 4 spoke all black leather momo wheel too. Its old school but had never been used, my best ever ebay barg, love it. Cant beat a deep rim.........

whats all this about VR6 engines breaking???
NickVR6 replied to Samwardy's topic in General Car Chat
Mines done 120k and the chains are very quiet and have never been done. It now uses no water at all after doing the stat housing and a hose. It uses no oil being driven with machanical sympathy either. Currently not working though.... -
I trust your judgement o wise one..............here goes.

Quick question.............I now have my fuel pipes, dont ask how! Tehy go on the fuel rail fine, but what can i lube up the other end with to get them on the plastic pipes that go under the car. Can only just get them on a couple of mill dry. Bearing in mind it will go in the fuel and or not dry out if DW40 etc?? I've already bent the blue pipe double and am really struggling. This is the hardest job I have ever done on any car, and i've rebuilt and swopped engines which is small fry compared to changing these pipes, oh yeah!

 With my hair still threatening to do a Bart Simpson at the thought of lunching £140 on a set of VAG reds, I bought these and got them today. VAG style metal ends (plug end) look bang on, but attached to this is a rubber peice like the cheap black leads, only the rubber bit is much thicker than the metal. Catch my drift? So the lead tool will never get as far as the metal as it wont go over the rubber bit first!!!! ALSO looking inside the metal end there is a rubber peice to grip the porcelin, and then the bit that actually clicks onto the plug top. If you can image that the rubber bit is only set into the metal by about 1cm you would end up with a 5inch long metal bit clicked onto the very top of the plug (hope that makes sense). The actual leads were far to fat to go in the channels but thats fair doos as they are advertise at 10mm. Not going to mention supplier as i assume they will be cool with refund. Any of you guys found any aftermarkets that fit? This is THE last time I'm bending over and taking it when buying bits. It really is one thing after another. At this rate i'll be doing a re-make of Falling Down soon!

Anyone know if the galaxy ones are similar? They are off the shelf at ford, and would be cool if they just need cutting down or are they shorter/totally different?
-
Mate blew me out on the fuel lines! Lucky i kept my order with VAG. They came in, cool! NOT. They turned out to be a pipe from fuel pump to tank and fuel pump to bulk head (abt 6feet mong) all for a 1989 1.8 16v. Must stop wearing that T-Shirt that says kick me while im down. Off the road for another week then. Thats if I can get the last pair left at the factory! Anyone know the gauge of the pipes? Is it 8mm internal bore and about 12mm external? This would help me put a temp one in.

How to reduce BHP loss from flywheel to wheels...you tell me
NickVR6 replied to StormVR6's topic in Engine Bay
The 17" Ronals i've put on mine really made it feel sluggish. And i dont mean ummm feels slightly off, it really did knock it back. I took them off and weighed them and they are just over twice the weight of the speedlines, and i'm not exagerating. Rolling radious is slightly higher, but i think thats marginal, the weights killed it and I dont even consider that at all. Im really not sure the price ive paid warrants the look. Looking at a comprimise now with some light dished 16s if i can find anything i like or can afford! -
cheers Henny. Just been pointed towards ford by Kev, and now have one in my hand. Its a Crank case presure breather type thingemy. VW would'nt sell me one without half the rest of the engine attached but Ford did it for £15 and it was in stock (what a consept!!). And, dare i say it excellent cust service from everyone i spoke to there who were all interested when i said i was packing a raddo vr! Its a happy day today! The blue oval has something to offer afterall. Shame they never tried putting the VR in anything smaller than a building...... what am i saying, im going now...

I want to remove mine to. You need to block off the black pipe and put a filter on the clear one aparantly, but i stuggled to get a full desc after going through 100s of threads. Theres wiring/sensors attached to my tubing though, so i dont know what to do with that!? or what it does? Is there a link to a definative thread anyone??

Any offers??

Day dreaming most of the day at work about how much i miss driving my VR now its been off the road for 4 days!
-
My insurers said know extra premium for my wheels or induction kit. When i got the paperwork through for the amend, they had put my excess up from £250 to £1000.

Can someone tell me what a couple of bits do that i now have off the car? On the big plastic intake pipe that goes to the throttle body there is a funny pipe that comes off it into the back of the head area (has a consetina type placky pipe off it. What is the grey plastic thing the plugs into this.into the big bore pipe that i took and eletrical conector off?? Only reason i ask is because they grey plastic has no metal conectors in it so the wiring is surely pointless..eh? On this same smaller bore pipe, what is the plstic flying soucer that joins it to the head area for? (Yes the one i had to break to get off the car!). Ap only £20..few Update....my mate has got me two VAG fuel lines from Germany and is "dropping them round" friday night, umm, now that really is friendship!

As I said, matts are a tad bling, not sure why i bought them. I think it was to cheer me up in the inter rain! Just bought s-Charged's cc grill, but i still have a mint original at home, which i took off as its the blocked off one. Body work is V-Good as is the interior, which is the main reason i booght it, ie panel fit and originality after looking at so many dogs. My old man allways drummed into me that you can fix mechanical bits but bodyworks never the same again after its been munched! Good job too at the mo.... I am at the start of a long road mod wise, but I am very much for subtle stuff, normally expensive! Think RH's or bbs at some point, but ill trying dropping it first then decide. Got to try and gain some enthusiasm to get back to those fuel pipes first though. Im not going back into the garage until the weekend. Partly because im borrowing my old mans UR 20v Quat this week! Wheres the rain now!

Cheers Guys. Well im up for one. My "Green" ind kit bought it with the engine mount failure! Cant help think thats what brough my fuel pipes to a head as well. BMC Please sir, ill keep my eyes peeled for that GB Wouldnt mind a samco set too, bloke at the inters flogging them for £80 *7 pipes!!) Gutted sold out quick, wonder who got a set on here?
-
No 1 on my list is the drop once its working again. I think FK CO's or Kev's setup seems a winner too...?
-
cheers mate, apt really as its taken me 2 months to sort these pics!
-
Cheers mate, nice to get a thumbs up from a pro. Gear knob was £6 off ebay. Not sure what it is but its understated, not far off teh original, came with the leather gater and the H pat lights up factory green! Steering wheel was £50 with boss from teh inters and the mats (edging on the bling) were £20 from some German nutter at there, he was a great laugh though. If you ment the back seats, i have a spare blakc mint set in the loft i amy have to sell to pay to get the f... thing working again!
