I agree with you totally I am a perfectionist as well and I do agree with what my friends are saying about just driving and enjoy the car instead of analysing it every time I go out in it ,e.g whats that noise ?whats that knock?Ill have to sort that! etc etc! But I cant Help it ,and as you say it is worth it, everything has to be right or as good as it can be! Come to think of it now its not actually driving too bad ,its driving in a straight line its just I find the steering a bit twicthy over bumps and I think thats part and parcel of having stiffend suspension? I will soon tighten every nut and bolt along the colomn and rack ,fit poly rack mounts ,mk2 clamp etc to try and improve things more maybe?Oh and also that preload screw a bit of tweaking. Anway thanks for the feedfack and I hope yor fix isnt just short term! :) VRT

No it was done with a proper laser 4 wheel jig and Im siure he tried to get it as good as possible! Im just thinking about the nut he couldnt loosen, may be he readjusted the other side to suit ? It was done cheap as its a freind of a friend and after closing! VRT

No ,no read out but what do you expect for a tenner!Although I wish I had a tenner on me,ended up giving him a score! Took it for a run last night and it does seem to drive straight if not sraighter but there is some play in the steering when cornering fairly fast over bumps the wheel goes loose for a second! Could this be to do with the rack mountings/bushes maybe? Any advice welcome! VRT

Right now the suspension has all been replaced ,new tyres fitted and the alignment supposedly done by the fella down at ATS. I took the rado down to the fella at ATS to get the alignment done last night but Im not a 100% its been done to my standard! Ok the car definitly drives better although I do remember when I fitted the track rod ends the n/s nut would not come undone. So he comes across this whilst adjusting the toe I would of thought and couldnt get it to budge ,even applying some heat with the welder! Anyway he reckons hes done the toe with out loosing the nut. When I asked him what he had set the toe to he said "paralell" and I said "zero" he replied "yes" .I did see the camber change on the n/s as I was watching near the ramp side. I did ask when I arrived if he could set the camber to - 0.8 or as near as and he said he would try his best! Now for the test drive ,I ended up getting lost in the sussex countryside which p***ed me off a bit but gave it a good run on whindy roads. It drives better but I still feel the steering is quite fijitty/sloppy through the wheel when going over bumps. Is this normal ? I seem to be able to feel suspension movements through the wheel also ,is this just because I have stiffened up and lowered the ride? I must say this is the only car I have driven with power steering around these terrible roads here, maybe most cars feel this way ? Maybe Im seeking prefection that just isnt possible ? Could this be another rack/colomn problem? Sorry for all the qs, cheers for any help! VRT

Gonna check all all the nuts and bolts mentioned before I start spending even more money ! -
Cheers for the help guys ! Does this 0.8 - apply to a car lowered only 35mm kevHaywire ? I am thinking of getting it done at ATS as the fella seems to know his stuff, but I would like the full monty caster camber etc! Ill find out what his rig can do. He done a great job on my tyres, 4 fitted, stumpy valves and balanced for a score! Not bad cosidering some places trying to charge me that per tyre!! Probably get a good deal on the alignment too ! VRT

Hi guys ! Just a quick one. Ive recently forked out on new suspension for my rado and was going to take my car to stealh to get aligned . The car is driving quite bad at the moment so I would like to get it done right and soon! i have booked in to stealths for the 25th as I know they know their stuff and will do a smahing job . The only thing is the distance I have to travel, fuel costs etc + alignment! I am gettin a full set of Kumho ku31 fitted before hand on the cheap from a freind of a friend at a ATS service centre. When I popped down there yesterday I noticed their 4 wheel laser alignment setup mmm. The question is do I really need to go all that way to get the job done, or get it done on the cheap 5 minutes down the road ? Is getting done at stealth going to make that much difference as long as this chap does a propper job with his laser setup ? Thanks for any advice ! :) VRT

Sorry forgot to ask kevHaywire do Ineed to bed in the H&Rs or are the settings Im using too high on the front ? I have heard you have the front harder than the rears, but have also heard from someone that I need to bed the springs in on the lowest settings ? Cheers for any advice !
-
Ok your right Im sticking with the speedys for a while and have ordered up a full set of Kumho KU31s ! Cheers for the opinions anyway guys ! :)
-
Thanks for the advice kevHaywire Ive just ordered myself a set Kumho KU31 off Mill Autos on Ebay for £172 delivered! Good price I thought ? Gonna stay with the speedlines for a little while longer Ive decided ! Ill use those tyre pressures aswell cheers !

16v the speedlines you see arent as mint as they seem ,and I think the rears might be leaking or just the really old tyres on them!

Hi ! I have recently changed all shocks, springs and mounts plates the lot with Koni H&R variaty. After installing myself in the rain i took it for a spin and was impressed but at the same time disapointed with the feel of the drivetrain through the steering wheel. There didnt seem to be any major knocking and klonking but I wasnt happy ! So on went new complete wishbones, trackrod ends and ball joints. I also brought some wheel bearings but hav nt fitted them as yet . Still not intirely happy with the feeling through the steering but it definitely made a difference ! I am running the konis on half a turn on the rears and one and a half or maybe two, as i read this is what vince sets it to. The tyres have pretty much had it on the front and dip in the centres. The rears have raised tread in areas not to mention old. I havnt had the geometry done at stealth yet ever was thinking about fitting bearings first . Anyway do you think its a combination of all these factors that are given me this undesirable ride at the moment ? Thanks for any info ! VRT :)

Any comments on 16" vs 17" ?

Cheers guys! Dirtysouth I dont really drive it much around town its parked up most of the week! should be going to my first vw shows this year so might see you around !

Im thinking of gettin aset of these (Team Dynamics Pro Race 2s)! First of all what do you think ? Mainly going for the light weight factor than bling factor ! Even though I think these arent going to look that bad at all with the wide spoke motorsport styling ? Just a couple of questions really .What ET would be best if the wheels are 7" as opposed to 6.5" on the standard speedlines? Can i alter the ET any further to bring the wheel out slightly more with out causing arch rubbing? Im currently running the Koni H&R setup lowered 35mm appx! Still deciding on what size though 16" or 17" comments please. I thought that as these wheels are supposed to be lighter it wouldnt affect much using the 17" and would also fill more arch space? thanks for any comments or help guys ! VRT :)

Sure Ill have to wait intill May now though ! It hasnt leaked much as I say only in really heavy rain, and if parked in a certain way makes it worse. I think Ill probably get that captive seal before hand if you advise it! Lets hope there isnt to much rain ! Cheers :)
