  1. You should have seen the arse on it Chris - espec when you are up its tailpipe in a Caterham !
  2. Piccys from the day just in ! I was in the wee green fella. The silver porker was the only thing we couldnt quite get past ... Dont know what an RTS-3 is !
  3. Just wanted to share my experience yesterday at Knockhill. I am planning to do my 1st trackday @ KH in oct ( in the Chim ) and wanted to get some experience first. I was chatting to some people on Pistonheads and was invited to be a passenger in the above car. The sun was out, so i launched up there. Totally amazing - there were Fezzes, Porkers, Evos - this thing nailed them all ! The only thing i can relate it to is a go-cart. Its stuck to the road like glue, yet with ( what seems like ) managable and predicatble oversteer. Although i am sure the ability of the driver was also a factor ! The pops and bangs on every gearchange were mental. As for KH - well i have spectated a few times there and its looks like fun on the telly, but you have to go round it to really appreciate the John Wier chicaine. Totally blind - an act of faith. Cost me £5 to hire a helmet and there were loads of people offering a passenger seat. Recommended ! I have a few photos and will post them up. Anyone else been in one of these 400bhp per ton karts?? I am ( slightly ) less apprehensive about tracking now, but there is free beginners instruction provided at the event i plan to do. Wilber felt decidedly slow and heavy ( and quiet ) on the way home ....
  4. Well, thanks. New zorst is on. Rest of it is diy stuff: new aux water pump, oil cooler gaskets, rad temp sensor. Wish i could get round to sorting bodywork out, but funds wont handle it at the mo.
  5. Hey Sandy, met you at the ScottishVAG meet in Fife last month. Your car is looking sweet man !

    Polish for tailpipe

Used my own polish on a supersprint tailpipe. mix of lots of salt and liquid soap handwash. no water. Salt crystals act as abrasive, and soap gets rid of tar oil etc. Only used water to rinse. Old toothbrush was usefull. Now very shiney !
  7. Just got a new Milltek cat back. Fits perfectly thanks to Jim @ Star. I am finding it a bit boomy / noisy though. How much can i expect it to quieten down ( if any ) as it gets coked up ? Will the note change at all? Would a new vw one be just a noisy whilst new? Is this 'cokeing up' a myth ?
  8. Just had a Millteck cat back system put on. Gotta say that i am not liking it too much. My original had a great deap growl as it went past 3.5k and sounded glorious up and onwards. Under that i couldnt really hear it. I cant tell you how much i miss the 'grind' at 3.5 - 4k !!!!!! Now, I can hear the low burble of the Millteck all the time. Some my like it, and I am hoping it will loose some boomyness after a couple of thousand miles / some cokeing up. If not, I may change back to an original at some point.

    Sound proofing

I got e-dead from ebay seller YGRO UK ( march sometime ). No problems at all. Here
  10. DanA - it all sounds horrific mate ! Must remember to get down the chemists ...
  11. Just about to do this job craigowl. Your timing is impeckable ! Thanks for some very usefull info. Hopefully this will cure my hot start problem as i am sure there is no run-on taking place ( indeed after reading this thread - there may not be any aux pump action at all ! )
  12. Ahem, i always park over two spaces at tescos. But i do it in the furthest corner of the car park. This way i get to stretch my legs a bit a lunchtime, plus i can open the doors further ( the Audioscape pods make getting in / out with the door only open a bit, more tricky ) I rekcon its v poor form to park in disabled bays. As to mother /child stuff - tesco has been targeting their ads at mothers for years now. Encouraging them with some wide spaces is just a logical progression. I wouldnt use them even i was a mother with a kid. Again - park furthest away and give little ones some exersise before you fill them up with sugar and take them to mcdonalds !
  13. I am about to do this job Gregor. Dont suppose you could take a couple of pix of it and a quick 'how to' ?
  14. I need to point out there is a difference between IAM and 'the system'. The session i had was based on the system: partly about risk observation, and partly about how to drive fast. It is how the police are taught to drive quickly and safely. I am not really sure how much of it correlates with an IAM lesson/test. I'll try to brake it down for those who are interested ( it will be good for me!) Observation: Its basically all stuff that a biker needs to know, and that a car driver normaly doesnt notice. EG: looking out for micro-climates ( damp, wet leaves, rough surface, generally less grip ) under trees and shaded areas. Watching out for skid marks as a hint that something may be catching other drivers out. Actually reading signs and adding this info to any decisions you make. Looking up and out, not just at the 10 yard area infront of you. So, you gather all this extra information (which passes you by when on 'auto pilot'), and add it to your normal driving routine. You become more alert to your surroundings, are less likely to find yourself in a suprising situation, and if you do, you can formulate a better plan to get out of it safely. Speed: Speed limits were NOT a major topic. The safe speed to drive along any particular stretch of road was. As per my normal driving, i always keep to 20 / 30 mph limits. NSL limits - all bets are off. Corners: Driving on the 'racing line' is not advisable on a road unless you can actually see over hedges etc, so the rest of the time, you need to be get around the corner on your side of the road with as little grief and as much speed as possible. My course was aimed specifically at handling torqy (?) rear wheel drive sports cars. In tivs, you really cant afford to be unsettling the car / doing other manouvers in the middle of a bend. If you are braking and turning at the same time, the torque of the engine will be trying to lock your rear wheels ( less weight on them ) while your foot tries to lock the front ones ( assuming you havnt got perfect heal toe technique ). The tyre with the most grip on it will become a pivot ( outside front ) and into a spin you go. So you need to complete your braking well before you start turning. Also, you dont want to be changing gear in the middle of a corner. Engaging the clutch forces the wheels to drag the engine ( no shit sherlock !) speed to match the new gear ratio - but its as effective as pulling on the handbrake in torqy rwd cars. So the ideal setup to take a fast corner is: just before you turn in, you should be going at the correct speed, in the correct gear, with both hands on the steering wheel ( in case of emergency opposite lock requirements ). During the corner you should have an even throttle, so as the car is a flat and balanced as possible. As the vanishing point begins to move away you apply the throttle steadily, allowing the rear to drift out slightly ( this will help you get the car and wheels pointing straight, earlyer ). As soon as the car begins to settle - with equal weight over the rear wheels ( still under steady acceleration ), you can floor it. The old addage is true: slow in, fast out. This may not be as important in a fwd car, but using the same technique can increase both your speed and safety. I try to put these techniques into practice in the VR and find that it helps smooth my driving out a lot. My passengers agree !! I dont know if the'system' is a good or bad method. Some people find it usefull others not. I am not really bothered about IAM or advanced driving. I do know that the margin for error in my tiv is a LOT less than in the VR, and 'the system' ( which AIM and the police use ) seems to provide a good set of tools to manage the loonacy. BTW: at some point an advanced motorist will tell you about this book: Roadcraft: The Police Driver's Handbook. Its pretty usefull and you can take or leave bits as you like. It does describe 'the system' very well. And is worth a read for the sake of a tenner. ( great for reading on the shitter. You can read up on a technique and mull it over ... ) cher...ching!

    Badger Damage

Wow thats some cat damage, G60jet. Yeh was doing about 60 on the A1 between Newc and Edin at night in rain with much traffic around me. Didnt have many options to avoid it ( without vastly increasing the risk of an accident ), just gripped the steering a bit harder. A pretty loud bang and the car jumped. Could have been nasty in those conditions. Actually, I hit a cow at 2am on a country road many moons ago. In my mk 1 ford fiesta. I managed to skid away from it, but its head hit the side of the windscreen (smashed it ) and it spun round to bash in the rear panel with its arse. Glad i managed to skid away, as even thou i was doing about 40mph, i think it could have rolled over the bonnet into my lap, had i hit it straight on. There was a herd of the fukers in the middle of an unlit b road. Had to get police out etc. It wasnt happy about being hit - farmer had to shoot it. Lesson learnt: if you see two green dots hovering in the middle of the road at night, dont presume you are just tired. Anyhow, i will try to heat the bumper up and see what happens. Is the whole bumper easy to get off ? How is the splitter bit attached to the bumper?

    oil leak

Welcome rikmutman. I am havin the same trouble. Got a can of wd40, sprayed the bottom of lots of oily things under the engine and gave it all a good wipe. Drove for 30mins and found this: New oil cooler i presume :(
  17. Had an 8 hr advanced driving lesson in the tiv from Ride Drive. Was great but, dont expect it to be easy. Advanced driving is pretty hard to get right and passing a test in it would be even harder i reckon. Very usefull stuff though. Techniques and tips to make everyday driving a lot quicker and safer ( esp in a tvr :D ) Hey - VR6 on TG - uktv2 as i type ! Whose was it again ? Haha - ' The Corrado VR6 - A Complete Flop'.

    Badger Damage

    Bollox. Cheers Judge.
  19. Ok - i have recorded a mov file of the noise, but am unable to edit it. *Dialup users* stay away - 15mb !!! Have a listenand see what you think the creaking might be. Its just two lock to lock turns. Turning right is worse.
  20. Pix as promissed  Not bad for about £40 all in ( thanks Gaz ! ). CD changer lives just behind the sub. Makes such a lot of difference having a sub - even one with holes in it !

    Badger Damage

Hit a rather solid sounding bit of wildlife last winter. Do i need a whole new bumper? Or is there something behind all this which can be banged out and all i need is the black lip ?
  22. Gan-on laddy !!!!!!!!! Brill race - Fantastic result.
  23. Know what you mean blackcat. my current to-do list is new aux water pump, new oil cooler, repair inner drive shaft cv boot, possible new fuel pump, possible new top mount, new exhaust, gonna try to do a few of them myself to save a few bob, but a lottery win would be most usefull !
