  1. £40 a wheel's about right... That's what I've been quoted to get my 6 Borbet C's completely re-done so that there's no curbing marks (done before I got the car!) and so that they all match (2 sets of 3 wheels!) 8) That's from a company with a REALLY good reputation who put a 2 year warantee on their work, and can make 'em any colour you want... 8) Polished will always cost more 'cos it's a shed load more work... :roll:
  2. :shock: :? I'd agree with getting it to a spark's to make sure there's nothing too amiss under there... Wiring fires are the worst thing in the world to repair on a car... :| :shock: Glad it's sorted for now, and also that you're not just burying your head in the sand and leaving it alone now you know there's something not quite right but it's working again... 8) :D

IIRC it was also in Volksworld which is all I read back then... 8) I'm a fairly recent (last 10 years or so!) water cooled convert! :wink: :roll: :lol: As I always say, my tastes in most things are many influenced and very varied... I know there's some things on my 'rado that some people will hate, and others will love, but I also know that I've done it for ME, and that's the important thing.... 8) When I worked at the beetle specialists, some numpty ran into the back of my Boss's Porsche 912 which was a one off from the factory... I wanted to make it into a Baja version of it's former self as the repair costs to put it back to normal were stupid... (Un?) Fortunately, my boss worked out a different way of fixing it, and it was repaired back to it's former glory... 8) (that's how I'd prefer it nowerdays... 8) ) I still think a BAJA version of a 911 style car would have annoyed more people, and got more attention than anything else I've ever thought up! :mrgreen: :| :roll: :lol: ( I also wanted to paint it Matt black just to really offend a few people... :roll: :lol: ) Ahh, the things we do in youth! :wink:
  4. he he WTF is that?! :lol: Some sort of amphibious version of * the thing* aka VW 181? :-P Yup, 4WD, go anywhere amphibious VW beetle based car... ...and, just to be correct, the Type 181 (Americans knew it as "the thing") was actually based on an early German military vehicle known as a "Kuebelwagen" (type 82) which was an off roader loosely based on the beetle... 8) I think I may have spent far too much of my teens messing about with air cooled VWs... :wink: :roll: :lol:
  5. Yeah, it's great! My little MKII driver gets abused so badly 'cos I really don't care about it (it's already paid for itself a couple of times over!) It makes a really nice change to driving my Corrado where I was always worried about where I left it and the like... 8) :wink: :lol:

    it's not that bad a job on a valver 'cos everything is reasonably easy to get at... I did one on my old 16v Corrado (14days before I wrote it off! :roll: :oops: ) and got it all done in a weekend having never done one before... 8) Get yourself a Golf MKII haynes manual which covers the 1.8 16V engine so that you have a good step by step guide... 8)

    the warped head will be cured by skimming it which you need to do when replacing the head gasket anyway... It's not that expensive to do on a 16V... If you've blown the gasket it would stop the car running and from starting as you've got no compression so the fuel never ignites with enough of a bang to keep the engine running... Hence why it sounds like it's trying to start, but never really does... High oil level isn't a bad sign, and does mean it's less likely that you've done any more damage to bearings and the like by cooking the engine... :? If it's the head gasket, you're gonna have to drop the oil anyway, and it'll be worth putting in new plugs too... 8)

    Right, here goes... 8) The warning buzzer is oil pressure warning. (not fuel... Corrados don't have a fuel warning) Your engine was so hot due to having no coolant that your oil pressure dropped to a level low enough to set off the buzzer. The hole in the expansion tank is the pressure release valve which is only there to release excess pressure in emergency (ie when it's too hot, too much pressure, or you've blown the headgasket) once this has blown, you normally need a new tank, and a new cap. The silver cylinder is the fuel pump/filter (in front of the drivers rear wheel?). It should buzz lightly, but not too loudly that you can hear it loudly inside the car... To test for fuel at the engine on a KE-jetronic car (1.8 16V), dis-connect the coil -> dizzy lead at the coil. Pull out an injector (grip it by the top of the injector, not by the fuel pipe!) and pull it straight out from the engine. They may be tight! Then point the injector into a jamjar and hold it there while someone else cranks the engine over. You should see a nice cone shaped spray of fuel going into the jar. If you don't then your fuel pump has a problem. If you do, put the injector back in (may need a slight amount of grease on the rubber seal to get it to click back in to the holder again) then take out a spark plug (reconnect the coil lead first!) put the plug into the plug lead, balance the plug so that it touches the thread of the plug onto the engine somewhere, then crank it over looking at the plug for a spark... I'm guessing that you'll find that you have both spark and fuel, 'cos to me this sounds like you've lightly cooked the engine and have slightly warped the cylinder head meaning that you've blown your headgasket. I did the same on my MKI 16V (same engine) no oil was lost, but I lost all the water (due to a split pipe) and then lost all compression, so the car sounded like it wanted to run, but just never caught... :roll: Good luck!

    Just make sure you do it when the engine's cold and take the expansion tank cap off first... :wink: If you do it while the coolant system's pressurised, it fires the sender and a jet of coolant a few feet into the air! :shock: :oops: found that one out the hard way.... :oops: :roll:

I like that idea Amy, It's probably a better location for the gauges than in mine as they'll be more in your line of sight 8) I had the problem that I'm putting a TV head unit in, so I couldn't put my gauges there, even though that was my first choice location... :) How much of a problem was it to put the head unit down in the cubby hole?

  18. :oops: Cheers... 8) I messed about with the illumination colours too so that the switch symbols are red, and the back lighting was blue... Although I've now got unfiltered white light instead of the blue 'cos I changed my mind again... :roll: :lol: I'm pretty sure that G60JET has a gauge pod on the A pillar of his car which is another way of doing it... 8)

    Nope, you can pull the wiring through the hole behind the door handle and un-clip it there (at least I did it that way on my old H plate valver) The loom is for the switch which activates the central locking... It's built into the handle so needs a loom to connect it to the car... 8)

    Lots! :roll: :mad: The cause of this problem is a badly designed striker on the back of the handle's lever. This is the bit of the handle that actually makes contact with the lock mechanism and pushes the lever on it to allow you to open the door.... The problem is that it's not strong enough and so snaps off leaving you with a floppy door handle which no longer opens the door... :? The only cure is to replace the door handle... A lot of people have started to change over to the Passat rear handles. They have a different design striker pin so you need to change the lock mechanism too, but have the added advantage of not having a key hole in the handle for slightly improved security (only do this Mod if you've got an alarm that activates the central locking though! :lol: ) If you just want to replace the original handle, there's no need to remove the door card... Dunno about replacing with the Passat units, I've not done it... YET... ;)

In my time I have driven lots of different cars, some extremely exotic and desirable, (Porsches, Ferraris, GTOs, top of the range Merc and BMs etc) others not so, (escorts, astras, metros etc...) but I have yet to come across a car that made me miss driving it and want to just go out and drive, as much as a Corrado... 8) After I wrote my first one off :oops: I had this nagging feeling that there was something missing afterwards with any car I drove from then on until the point I started to test drive some G60s with a view to buying eventually ending up with J-DUB... 8) Now that J-DUB's been off the road for a serious amount of time and I've been working on bits of the car that you wouldn't normally get access to, I can really appreciate just how well the Corrado is put together as a complete package... For an 11 year old car (in my case) it still looks great, drives (when it's got an engine!) better than nearly all new cars and the interior is still a nice place to be... 8) The grin factor for me is just the sheer enjoyment of driving the car, last summer blasting around the cat and fiddle between Buxton and Macclesfield I killed a set of tyres (as Caios G60PWR can testify!) in a matter of a couple of months, purely from enjoying the car as it can be on roads like that :wink: and just thinking back about it puts a big daft grin on my face... :D
