18 quid for a pair of LEDs!, they're havin' a giraffe.
-
They have a very definite on/off flash. Maybe a slightly odd colour due to having to pass through a red lense but then they are bright enough to pass through and still show up yellow(ish). You must use resistors or a relay though to get them to flash at the correct rate.
-
I got them from a guy on ebay - warden_jp2002. He sends them from Hong Kong so expect a few days delivery and cost was about £7 delivered. I got the resistors from the link above, at autobulbsdirect, who could probably have done the LEDs cheaper too, take a look at them first. Don't buy a flasher relay from HK, it doesn't work.
-
My God, these things actually work! Thanks to Ziderapple i put my order for some resistors in yesterday, got them today and stuck 'em straight in. They fit snuggly within the bulb housing and i soldered them down like this Often things that i buy don't seem to work out as i had planned (like a CD that arrived today that was a single, not an album :x) so i'm well chuffed with these.
-
Awesome, thanks.
-
Either that or i'll rip the fuse box out and swap the wires over - as long as it is just wrong polarity, i don't want to destroy my car if i can help it.
-
Ok, well i replaced no. 21 relay with the relay i got from the guy on ebay (also sold me [link=http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=200085325373&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=010]these [/link]bulbs) and it doesn't work. The relay works when i put a voltage across the battery and earth terminals and put the multimeter across either B or E and the third terminal but the car is obviously wired differently. Has anyone else bought one of these relays and had the same problem? Reading the Haynes wiring diagram i can't really make head nor tail of it. Are there any auto electricians that can shed light on how to make this work please? Thanks, James.

Hello. I've got hold of some LED bulbs for the rear indicators which make them flash faster than normal. I've heard that to overcome this you can add a resistor (to each bulb?) or a relay specifically made for the job. Can anyone tell me which relay i would need to replace and would i need LED bulbs in the fronts also?

Pictures, PICTURES!! what are they??

Yeah, i've been a few times including a 'Christmas special' when only me and a couple turned up  It's a bit far to go when nobody else bothers. I've been thinking about the meet at the Douglas Bader in Martlesham but i'm not sure when that is. I'll make it some day soon.
-
Hmm, i'm now starting to think maybe i shouldn't go so big. I don't mind a bit of hardness tbh, but a bit of comfort as i get older isn't a bad thing either.
-
So, a bit stiffer because of the smaller profile, yes? Maybe 16s would be a better choice for comfort then but i like the way a 17 fills the arch. My 15s look like biscuit tin lids with standard suspension.

I must update my avatar some time soon, that car's long gone.
-
Sure, will do but i'm not sure i'd be able to tell much difference between 17s and 15s to be honest. The width would be the same (205) and the rolling diameter would be about the same so i guess the only difference would be between the tyres - dodgy Federals and Toyos. Still, i can take some pictures and tell you what the ride is like. BTW, has anyone got any opinions on a 17"x7J wheel with 205 tyres? Is that a bit skinny? Should i go 215 with 7.5J? I suppose that's just going to add some cost though but gain some grip, lose a bit of handling at the front or gain handling? James.

I had a Magnex on the Mk2, it was a DTM pipe. It looked good and sounded good but then the weld cracked round the pipes and i had to send it back. To be fair they didn't quibble but they didn't make the DTM anymore and i had to have an oval pipe. This also looked good but Christ what a din! I hated it. It was louder than the DTM by some way and woke all the neighbours i'm sure. It made me sound like a garyboy. Needless to say i got shot of that. The Mk2 is now original again. Since then i've decided to give Magnex a miss, i just can't gamble that it might sound the same. By contrast there doesn't seem to be many people who don't rate their Milteks and Supersprints and they look awesome. We'll have to meet up sometime and swap ideas. I'm interested in having a look at your angel eyes as i probably won't be fitting mine for a little while. Do you go to any meetings round here? James
-
Excellent. I love it when a plan comes together. I chose the Weitecs as i have KW Var. 2 on my Mk2 which i thought were absolutely fantastic. Seeing as they are made by the same company they should be good also. I couldn't believe how much difference they made to the drivability of the car. I fitted polybushes at the same time too so they obviously helped. This car is going to get the same treatment too so i'm looking forward to being able to chuck it about a bit. Just out of interest Herisites, how do you rate your Miltek? Is it a full system? I'm looking for an exhaust that won't wake the neighbours at idle but will enhance the VR sound at higher revs. I've been undecided between Miltek and Supersprint. James.

Hi Trudubrstu! I may have seen you about too but only in passing, not long enough to have a butchers at your ride. Looks good, nice and clean paintwork unlike mine. Looks like i have a lot of work to do and i wanted to get it all done at once but as more parts turn up i'm getting itchy to get them on. Look what turned up today...:-) I phoned Wheelbase and they reckoned the 5x100 wasn't available any more. They're just using old photos but since they haven't updated the website to show this i hope the guy was telling the truth. No reason why he wouldn't i suppose. James.

Well, i'd like some 17s and these are the wheels i want... I would like to be a bit subtle, though what's subtle and what's not is up to the individual. Angel eyes aren't everyone's taste and may be a bit busy at the front but they're going on. I'd thought about a beesting and about smoked repeaters, btw, are they legally required? I wanted to shave them off but not sure if it's allowed. I haven't thought about dewipering the rear but that's definitely possible. I'm also going to debadge the rear except for the centre VW badge as no one who's not into VWs know's what car it is anyway! Heresites, i love your wheels even though they are a bit too wide for my liking but they look damn good. Keep suggestions coming, i need ideas.

Hello everyone. The time has come to start making some changes to my car. It's '95 VR6 in black but totally standard when i bought it. It has fairly high mileage at 180k but i knew i'd be taking the spanners to it so it didn't bother me too much, especially as the interior was in pretty good nick and leather too. :-) It has some stone chips and also some rust on the leading edge of the bonnet and wing and also the driver's door but i'm hoping to learn enough about spraying from doing my Mk2 to attempt these imperfections myself. If i cock the mk2 up this will have to go to the local shop. :( Here are some photos i took as standard. I'd like to debadge it except for the VW on the back so first off is a dedadged grill. The lights are going to get a severe tweaking so i'm starting with red rears. Also in the lighting department i'm going for In Pro headlights and fogs. I'm not sure when i can get these fitted but i'll post pics when done. On order are some Weitec GT coilovers but i really need to find some suitable wheels before fitting them. Anyone know where i can get some Ace 218s with 5 stud pattern let me know. Any thoughts on what's been done so far and what's to come is appreciated. I have other plans also but i'll post them as they happen. Something else i almost forgot are the aero wipers, what a difference! James.
-
I also spoke to the guy on ebay who did A218s (like the RX) with Proxes for £500. He says that they are only made now in the 4 stud pattern so if you have a 5 stud you'll need to get a set second hand or maybe shipped in from the States. Steve, i loved your wheels and just missed out on them but i've been trying to find a set ever since. No luck yet. James.
-
In reverse are they squealing without even touching the pedal? Do they also squeal going forward but at slow speed? Maybe they are seizing and not retracting from the disc after braking.
-
Are your discs contaminated with oil or grease? Try cleaning them with some meths.

I got my clutch from Euro car parts recently for nearly a ton. I felt it should have been cheaper but i couldn't be bothered to drive somewhere else and search for it again. It was a Sachs at least and came with the release bearing. LUK are decent enough i think. GSF list it for about £80 if you can get 10% off. I don't know what the other, more expensive one is. If it was Sachs you'd think they'd mention it. You may as well do the release bearing while you're at it if it's not too much. I suspect that VW would be a lot more than the £100 i paid, i'd be suprised it it's any less than £150 for the parts only. I should think that doing it in the car park would be a bit much, it's a fairly major job. I did mine while the engine was out, it took about 15 minutes but it would be a lot, lot longer on the car and you need jacks and a clutch alignment tool would be handy.

I think i used a 22mm socket over mine and bashed it with a wooden mallet. Perfect. Don't forget to clean your discs with meths or something to remove any grease.
